I think the biggest problem with X1 Carbon (and all ultrabook in that category) is the lack of removable ram, and odd SSD format. So basically are locked in and no aftermarket choices in upgrade option.

Also another thing that i don't like about integrated battery format is that there is lack of option for DIY upgrade. You actually have to send the machine back to depot to do the battery swap, you can't get the battery aftermarket and do it yourself.

So if Lenovo does decide to end production of the battery in say 3 years or so, then you wouldn't even have a place to source an aftermarket battery (provided there is no integrated firmware).

I was under the impression they were required to have replacement parts for 5 years from the date it is withdrawn from the market.

5 years from the date of withdrawn? Maybe that is in the States.

Most people hang on to the X301 for sentimental value. It's old technology. On top of that, the screen is not that good. At the same time, the X1 Carbon is not a definite "wow." (Only the ThinkPad W520/W530 can be considered a solid winner in its own class.)

If you need a thin and light laptop, there are plenty of decent choices right now, such as the Samsung Series 9.

In any event, it's your computing tool that you use personally. Only you can decide. Happy New Year! :)

I have an X301 too now, and I would never trade it for any other ThinkPad, not even a brand new i7 X1 Carbon. It's just too awesome for that.

If the X301 screen quality bugs you, you can always get an AFFS replacement.

The Panel is from a Fujitsu T5010 Tablet. It costs about 130$ from China. Downside is the 1280x800 resolution, but honestly, it's still 16:10 and it's AFFS! Come on!

I will swap my screen when I feel like it, but at the moment I do want to enjoy 1440x900 pixels. Colors are better than my X220 IPS btw, so it's not THAT bad as everyone keeps saying.

Wow! The difference is night and day! Personally I would take the AFFS over the non-AFFS screen. The TN panel looks almost as it is not even powered on! Hmm...a future project is now on my 'to do' list :)

I've linked this page to the first page of the Used X301 owner's lounge if you don't mind. The AFFS display looks great but I find the original display to be fine for now and I like the 1440 x 900 resolution.

@Bronsky. I was waiting for you to chime in as I remember seeing your posts regarding the X301. How much did you buy your X301 for Bronsky?

$425 on Ebay. It was in beautiful condition and had the extra CD Bay 3 Cell battery. I love my X301. It is a dream to work on.

Can you advise me on how difficult it is to replace the X301 screen with the Fujitsu one? Are the connectors the same?

The connectors are different. You will need to solder your own connector. It is allot of work and only advisable for experienced users.

It should look something like this: Datei:SXGA-Mod Bild01.jpg

Yes. The unit has been successfully pin-modded. You should be able to find the information in the used X301 Owner's thread linked in my sig.
