    1. Disconnect and reconnect the flat orange cable.

    2. Get a new keyboard. (If your ThinkPad is within warranty, IBM Support in Atlanta will ship a new keyboard for next-day delivery.)

They usually look up the part from your serial number. (I ask them to say what they see on the screen. Also, I always register my ThinkPads.) You will likely receive the right part. If not, it will take just another call and another day. I love IBM Support in Atlanta.

yeah i have only had one other problem and they were great

Well this is weird, I didn't do a thing and all of a sudden the keys have started working again. The backlight still does not work though so it is a good thing they are sending a new one. Strange.

Sounds to me like the connection could just be loose. Did you try reseating the keyboard like Kaso suggested?

Yep I received the new keyboard yesterday. Everything is fine. I just wondered if it was a simple fix or if it really was defective. I tried multiple times to take the keyboard out and reconnect it so that wasn't it. Thanks for the input though!
