Ive only had my R61 for 3 months, and my space bar has an oval shaped "stain" on the far right side. Is it possilbe that im already having keyboard ware because the "stain" is where my thumb hits the space bar when i type. The stain is like a shinier shade of black or an oil stain. Thats the best way i can describe it.

Some people just have more oily skin than others and it leaves residue on the keyboard. Me being red haired and light skin means I have oilyskin..and it sucks. I have to change guitar strings monthly, my thinkpad keyboards get just like yours. Not much you can do but keep cleaning as much as possible. It can't be avoided just have to deal or replace the keyboard a lot.

i clean my hands often, especially with hand sanitizer because i am at college where everybody seems to always be sick. I mean its kind of annoying that only after 3 months i have signs of ware but o well. Im just really picky about little things like that.

So what you are saying is that you are sure it isn't the oils from your skin on the keyboard, you have cleaned the keyboard and the mark persists? Seems hard to believe that it is already waring,

I just rubbed a little 70% isopropyl alcohol onto the space bar, and there is still a small shiny reflection on the bottom right part of the key. I guess i already have keyboard ware after 3 months of use, which is very surprising to me.

r u serious? how could a piece of plastic ever show ware from use? Especially, when it's on a product like keyboard, and it is usually one of the most frequently used keys.

    THIS IS MADNESS......

My brother has had his x61 for about 10 months now, he uses it everyday and his keyboard still looks like new. Zero signs of ware anywhere on the keyboard.

I am sure that every person hits keys differently, some harder some softer and it seems hard to compare wear rates between users. Washing your hands is not the same thing has using hand sanitizer just as an FYI it leaves all the dirt and crud behind to be mashed onto the keys.

wtb titanium alloy key bodies that last longer than anything else on the notebook.

It's "wear", not "ware". I find it difficult to believe how many of you have made this mistake in your posts.

i feel your pain. i burn through extended life strings in three weeks.

as for laptop keyboards, my old NMB lasted a good ten months before I had to swap it out. I just put a new one into my T400 and it has exceptional feel.

thank you Lenovo for making swaps like this so easy!

Well, if the keyboard bothers you, then ask Lenovo if they will send you another one you can install. Not sure if they will consider it covered in the warranty.

Could it be the hand sanitizer that your constantly using?
Maybe some ingredients in the sanitizer are being left on your keyboard. Or maybe a chemical in the hand sanitizer is reacting with the plastic on the keyboard.
    Just a though...
    be dirty

I have an Alphasmart Dana and its keyboard got very shiny on some keys over time. Other users reported the same.

yes, plastic, just like metal wears over time.
basically, you've kept polishing it with your finger to a shine.

It does not happen at the same rate with all plastics but it does happen.

I am wondering what the big deal is. Really...
