i've had my x201 for about 3 months now and i am just now experiencing this problem. today when i close the lid so the laptop can go to sleep, the battery indicator stayed lit on the lid and the moon icon comes on but after that both indicators go off and when i open the lid, the system won't resume.

when i press the power button to turn it back on, windows tells me that the system was shut down unexpectedly. i currently have all hte latest drivers and BIOS version 1.22. is it possible to downgrade the bios to see if that will fix the problem?

i've read the other long thread at lenovo forums about this problem and they seem to say that a motherboard fix was all that was necessary. are these motherboards in stock or will it take a long time for them to get it. i don't want to wait too long because i need the laptop for school

the thing that worries me is that i've never had to send my laptop in for warranty repairs before. i've read about many people who sent their laptop in and it was physically damaged by the repair center. is this just an isolated case? can you guys tell me about your warranty repair experience? what's the turn around time?

I don't know if it matters any, but if I put my X301, or T61 to sleep, and don't use it for awhile (say, 2-3 days), the next time I power it back up I notice it lost a significant amount of battery power.

I think I read that if you put your laptop to sleep (while not connected to an AC outlet), it looses something like 5-10% per day that it's not plugged in. Even when it's "sleeping" it's still "on".

Now, if you completely shut the system down, and it's still loosing power, then that's a different story. With my experience, putting your laptop to sleep, WILL still cause it to loose battery power though.

that's true but for my case, it's only a half an hour to an hour between sleep and waking up. and yea i mean completely shut down not losing juice

I think it depends on how much juice you're losing. Did you factor in the fact that it takes electricity just to shut down the laptop/put the laptop to sleep and wake it up?

no im not talking about losing juice, i mean it will completely shut down at the moment i put it to sleep. so once the moon indicator lights up, it will just turn off completely

Oh so that's what you meant when your title said "losing power". I was wondering why your title and your thread had nothing to do with each other.

Strange problem though; I want to ask "Are you sure you are sleeping and not hibernating?", but I'm going to assume that you yourself set the laptop to sleep and not hibernate when the lid is closed.

I'm not sure why Windows would tell you that your laptop was shut down unexpectedly so I'll let others chime in on this and the warranty repairs.

yea usually to wake it up i just open the lid and it will resume but when the problem occurs, nothing happens and i have to use the power button to turn it on (not resuming anymore). and it acts like the battery was pulled out when the computer is on (which of course it wasn't).

could an improperly flashed bios cause this? or is a bios upgrade that either works or doesn't. i was thinking maybe because maybe the bios wasn't flashed 100% correctly, some small issues might come up

Check if you have Hybrid Sleep activated in the Power manager.
Or does your laptop go in Hibernation?

I have had the same symptoms on my T410 periodically - it used to not wake up every couple of weeks but appeared almost fixed when I upgraded my Intel HD drivers a few months back. I say almost because it did happen once a couple of weeks ago.

Looking back in the Event Log - this is where I could see the issue

    - I see an ACPI wake up event, source = ACPI Lid (and no, I'm asleep at 5AM etc. when it happens. No idea what is waking the PC up!
    - I see a couple of key entries, source Display saying the display driver igfx stopped responding. This is one of the first and last lines, happening twice.
    - There are a few other lines looking like the PC has resumed from sleep (DNS client running etc.)
    - Then I see the Unexpected Shutdown log from the start a few hours later

Do you see anything similar logged in the event log?

no it is definitly not hibernating. when i checked the event log, all it said had that was related was a critical entry that said that the laptop was unexpecedly shut down at the time it happened.

Anything logged before that? For instance showing it had woken up first?
