my brothers t400 screen just cracked. no idea how, he is assuming its because his friend dropped his backpack with the laptop in a case. he sent it in, we got a quote back that it costs $750 for parts and labor to repair a screen. are you SERIOUS?!?! the laptop only cost $900 and it's a month away from 1 year, and you are charging me $750 to replace a screen?!

    wow...

well if it was really from his friend dropping it then you should pay for it since it's accidental damage. that is, unless you have the thinkpad protection plan

i'm not arguing that i should pay for it, i'm arguing that it costs $750 to repair a $900 year old screen. that's ridiculous

get a panel from fleabay, and get creative and replace it yourself.

just wait until you get a quote from Apple for over a grand for a screen replacement!!!!

Ya, the screen business is ridiculous. On my Sony Vaio W (netbook, bought for $400!) the screen alone is $333, not including labor costs to replace.

When it comes time for us to sell our old laptops we should just take out and sell the screen itself - that alone should pay for everything...

That sounds about right for a screen replacement - they are expensive, and labor charges are high for those. Plus, such damage isn't covered under warranty, so you shouldn't be expecting anything more. Seeing as it is almost out of warranty anyway, I would purchase a screen online (should be in the range of $100-300, depending on the screen) and install it yourself.

Yep, buying displays from the manufacturer is almost always ridiculously expensive. If you are willing to install the monitor yourself (there are tons of tutorials and such on the web for that, I believe), you can buy a display for between $200 to 400 (depending on what display you have) from www.screentekinc.com. I have bought a display from them and read others who have.

If people knew what the costs associated with maintaining a parts inventory added up to, I think they might have a better understanding of why out-of-warranty repairs by the factory are prohibitively expensive. I recommending learning how to do your own repairs, it's pretty easy really.

out of warranty repair is always expensive, regardless of the laptop companies. This is why you should get thinkpad protection plan. If you are handy, then just change the LCD yourself, it is not that hard.

Follow this manual if you don't know how (as said you can source a LCD from online website for aroudn 200 dollars).

No you are not being scammed. Tell your friend to change it manually if he's tech-savvy enough. If not, you do it yourself.

    Lenovo should cover it, IMO.

My friend's Latitude screen cracked also. The corner of the screen was cracked, but the computer was usable. This was a $1,400 laptop with some good warranty and Dell didn't even hesitate to take the laptop. The laptop arrived with a new screen in 3 days. That was a smooth service. While the Latitude itself isn't as good as T series, the Dell warranty is a lot better.

Are you sure your friend didn't have the additional cost accidental damage warranty?

whether the LCD damage repair is covered or not depends on the discretion exercised by Dell's warranty repair provider.

Just because Dell did do it for free on couple of cases do not extrapolate that to be the general case for all LCD damages. Otherwise, there is no market for accidental damage warranty, in addition the LCD is the most fragile part of the laptop.

The Depot repairer changed both the top and bottom casing in addition to the internal magnesium chassis on my T61, doesn't mean that Lenovo standard warranty will cover personal damages to the thinkpad casing under the standard warranty term.

pretty much.... aftermarket repair should be much cheaper, or just follow the manual. Last time i was quote for 1200 dollars to change the LCD on a macbook pro, i told them the laptop wouldn't cost that much. The Macbook Pro was sent back to repair in China for around 200 USD.
