Honestly, after the 15% off coupon and 10% cashback through Live.com, I think this is a pretty good deal. Personally, I think the extra inch re: screen size makes a big difference.

for $359 it seems like a pretty sweet deal. i would of definitely have gotten one if i didnt have a laptop and needed something portable. -

Actually, after 10% Live.com Cashback the cost is only $328.19 for the black model. Here are the details:
Lenovo IdeaPad S10 - 42312BU $429.00
USPIDEAPAD15 Coupon Code 15% Off: $64.35
10% Live.com Cashback: -$36.46

I need battery, and max portability are my biggest concerns. (also would like to stay under $500) -

Upgrading the ram and hard drive (if needed) is pretty easy at $328.19 for the laptop. The Dell option looks interested but an 8.9" screen is pretty small. I wouldn't mind paying more for a 10.2" screen versus an 8.9" screen.
-
rocketscientist Notebook Consultant
8.9" Screen for Dell:
4.58" x 7.63"
10.2 Screen for Lenovo:
5.25" x 8.75"
The total surface area for the 8.9" is 35 square inches and the 10.2" is 46 square inches. Despite the small battery (buy a 2nd one) the 10.2" screen is going to be much nicer. -
I also want a netbook that has Macbook-style instant on and instant wireless connection when resuming from standby. The last thing I want to do when whipping this thing out to check my email is wait a minute for the thing to turn on and get online. I'll wait for the reviews to see whether or not the s10 has this. I would expect the Dell w/ the custom Ubuntu install + SDD to have this. -
-
-
agreed. until you have total non-volatile ram i dont think its happening. these are conveniently about $1000 cheaper though, plus they are Macs, yeah anyway. Instant on that really works is cool, but not something I cant wait for.
-
some changes to the site.
haha, no X4500 (officially). big surprise.

I'm definitely waiting until they have the 6cell. It's tempting at the price and discounts but a 3 cell is going to be pretty useless (for me). This is meant to go out side so the longer it can last on battery the better. Isn't buying a batter separately going to be at least $50 more?
Plus these are not shipping until September/October (in line with what they announced). You're more pre-ordering than anything else. A lot can happen between now and the time it ships. I think Lenovo just put this on the site to stop some people from purchasing other netbooks. They know about the waiting game and know if they announce something like this people are more likely to wait.
Their releases are horrible with so many mistakes. I'm waiting until the first batch comes out and there's a review. By then I think they will have everything settled and hopefully be able to ship out these netbooks in a timely manner. -
Hey, guys. The ecoupons aren't working anymore on the main or cpp sites. An online rep says that they expired and when they extended them, they weren't extended for the S10s. Bummer. Wish I had my credit card ready last night when I built my order!

I found this in my inbox this afternoon :

I got one of those emails today also but it was expected. If it was an error the only resolution would be to inform you of the error and give you the ability to cancel or just unilaterally cancel the order.
I wonder what will happen with the red version that listed the CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combination in the specifications? I was hoping that the config would come with an external drive but if they send out another informational email I would expect at least a $10 refund as I only ordered the red one due to the drive. Also, the red one is pretty cheesy with a white keyboard and the white hinge. -

PS. I find it funny they linked to wikipedia in their e-mail. I am surprised they didn't publish a comparison page on lenovo.com.
-
coupon code is not working for the black one.
why are they off of the pre-release price points and when can we expect the higher end coming out, this is nice but I am definitely waiting? -
I am thinking the higher end models will come out near the end of September/beginning October, but I don't think anyone knows really. -
any confirmation on code not working? the main thing for me is the battery, I am gonna buy this for ultra portability and battery life is one of the main concerns.
the ram I can always upgrade later although 512 is kind of running thin and the hd space is not an issue at all really since its just gonna be a computer to bring to class with me and leave in the car alot.
Also what optical drive does this machine have, didnt see one listed on the lenovo page(after further consideration and never owning a netbook before, Im thinking they dont have one, just the airbook, but is there a way to use the cd drive on your desktop like with the airbook, making files into isos, transferring over network to netbook, and then mounting to virtual drive sounds like a pain)?
Also where is this 6 cell battery, is that to be standard on the higher end model? -
The code is dead. 512mb is alright for XP but of course 1.5-2 is better.
It does not have an optical drive. None of the netbooks have one and none that are planned have it either.
Im not sure about about mounting to a virtual drive but i would guess it can be done. The 6 cell battery is suppose to come out on the higher end model which has BT and a 160Gb HD.Im not sure when that is suppose to be released but im sure its sometime in the next month or two. -
the dell is out. it look fugly. standard cheap gray plastics. no good pics yet but the ones i see are enough for me. looks like it just has no style.
picts via Engadget.
Aleman,
if you were waiting out for the Dell, I would reconsider.
Atom processors are said to be in very short supply. This may be one of the reasons the world will end before we get our netbooks.
Update Acer One. Looks like they want to oust the Lenovo before it even ships. Or they are getting ready for version 2. Nice machine, quite cheap now.
via Laptop Magazine.
Unlike some other netbook manufacturers (eh hem, MSI), Acer is driving the cost of its mini-notebook down. Today the company announced that the U.S. prices on its Aspire one are being lowered by as much as $50.
The Windows XP Home version, with a 120GB hard drive and 1GB or RAM, originally $399 will now retail for $349. The Linpus Linux Lite version (full review here), with an 8GB SSD and 512 MB of RAM, will now retail for $329, down from $379.
Saving the best for last, Acer is also introducing the $399 Aspire one AOA150-1447. Aimed at business professionals, this one features the six-cell battery we have all been waiting for. It also sports a 160GB hard drive and Windows XP Home.
Our reaction: Swweeeet!
Why the price cut? Well our press representative tells us that the “Aspire one is the must-have back-to-school supply for students.” But playing devil’s advocate we really have to wonder if Acer is feeling the pressure from the upcoming Dell Inspiron Mini.
Either way, this price drop and the avilablity of a sku with a six-cell battery makes the Acer Aspire one the favored 8.9-inch netbooks on the market. Stay tuned for our review of the XP version with the three-cell battery. -
Hello,
Just wanted to let people here know that I've started a dedicated S10 forum. Please join me and other future S10 owners share our knowledge and thoughts.
http://www.s10lenovo.com
See you guys there! -
The BT will be nice too, think Im def gonna hold off until the higher end model comes out. Ill prob just stick with the standard 1 gb, should be enough and not have to upgrade to 2 gb, would be cool if they did it with one stick though, but I guess they are not gonna be nice about it.
If there is no optical drive then how do you propose I install anything from a cd? Make iso and mount to virtual drive is my only idea, as already stated.
How do these netbooks run, meaning assuming I get the 1 gig model how can I expect it to compare to my regular notebook? Will running office 2007, web browsers, aim, wmp, google earth displease me as in comparison to my notebook? I know obv photoshop and the like are not recommended but should I be ok running all the standard software, thanks alot Im really new to netbooks? -
I don't know if Google Earth is going to run very well on a netbook especially if you turn on the 3D, but I hear all the other stuff should run well.
-
well i guess we can change that to office xp haha, im tired of 2007, its a piece of crap.
i just seem to use google earth alot, especially for directions, its not really THAT important, just wanted to see if a semi demanding app would run well. -
You have started a forum for the S10?
Is this for the Vapor-ware model with the Unobtanium 2 or 3 CPU? -

Anybody else finally get order confirmations from Lenovo for the S10? I have a estimated ship date of Sept 16th.
-
I got one, but shipping date is still Sept. 9th. I got all excited thinking that they shipped it or at least moved up the estimated date.
-
update. lenovo is now sold out of the ideapad S10. CS had told another user that they expect them to be available in a month or two. sounds like lots of overtime for the already overworked employees at Lenovo.
-
It must be tough in the notebook business. You always have to announce new models or consumers are going to look at competitors. So you announce models earlier than you should and you end up having to release them before they are properly stocked and face stocking issues and make consumers mad because you can't supply enough machines.
And the cycle begins again every 3-6 months! -
truth be told webdtc, we are a nation of gadgets and commerce. i think lenovo cut their own throats on this one. they were losing the jump from Asus, Acer, HP, and MSI, so they issued a quick release ahead of time. (IMO) They have quite a bit of orders to fill. Its their own fault for making such quality products.
-
any updates?
-
I know I'm glad I ordered one one the first day it was availale.
I ordered right away when the 15% coupon was working cause I knew Levono weren't suppose to be available for the S-series.
I'm glad Levono decided to honor all the S10 orders with the 15% discount because I got a confirmation that it was being processed already.
My expected ship date is 9/9.
I'm even more glad now that they aren't taking any more orders for another month or so. -
Is it possible to *relatively easily* swap the HDD with SSD later on? I don't know how it works, but I heard from ppl with eee pc 1000H swapping their HDD with SSD. Does it mean the HDD stays there but SSD as add-on, or does the SSD completely replace the HDD?
-
Here's a nice review.. -
Does 2.5' refer to the size of the connecting slot btw the memory (HHD/SSD) and the motherboard? And are you refering to all recent netbooks in gereral or only Eee pc's?
-
-
NIIICE, I am really excited about these netbooks. I have a 14" Asus A8j laptop and I used to bring them to school all the time, BIG MISTAKE!!! It died within a year (which was fortunate in a way that warranty covered the entire repair cost).
Now I use it strictly as a desktop. So I need a netbook for work/study. I was previously interested in Asus 1000 and MSI Wind, but I think the size difference btw the 10' and 9' is really significant. And I think 10' screen on a 85% keyboard works perfect, thus I am really looking forward to the S10.
I notice the screen is Matte, is it more of a finger print magnet than a glossy screen? And is s10 screen almost the same size as the Eee 1000 or Wind? -
I think matte screens don't show fingerprints as much as glossy screens. But you do you touch your screen with your fingers a lot?
The S10, eeepc1000 and Wind all have the same size and resolutions (10", 1024x600) -
Yeah that's what I thought too, but I was reading a review/preview from another site, he was saying *since* s10 has a matte screen, it's more of a finger-magnet.
I have glossy and it's extremely easy to show finger print, that guy probably doesn't know what he is talking about.
Darn, I really wanna get my hands on s10 now. Hope it will REALLY be available in North America by Oct. And hopefully, they will have a 6-cells version. -
I'm canceling my order. I initially had an estimate ship date of September 9th, and now it changed to November 18th. I'm not waiting 3 months for a netbook, sorry.
-
-
Lenovo really dropped the ball with this one. -
Big big fail indeed. In fact, I'm quite frustrated by all the screw-ups by Lenovo -- the juvenile typos and ridiculous ship dates. Soooo unprofessional.
Well, that's just too bad; they are losing business. People will snap up eee's, Aspire One's and Dell Mini's while Lenovo's S10 is still vaporware here in North America.
lenovo ideapad s10 now ready for purchase
