hi, i'm intersted in a lenovo t61/t61p. i have few questions.

is it worth getting a 3 year extended warranty?

is it easy on a thinkpad to reformat/restore to factory default condition?

    is there any trialware installed?

what antivirus does the thinkpad come with (norton is it?)? is it a trial/how long is the subscription? easy to remove?

is there any problem with the thinkpad line i should know about?

doess the vista's instant on/off work?

You may wish to check out the warranty guide. Whether you want to get it would depend on your needs.

It is very easy to re-install. With the newer machines you can do a custom re-install.

There is the Office trial and some would some of the ThinkVantage tools to be resource hogs though not bloatware in the traditional sense.

Yes, it does come with a 90 trail of Norton which you could of course extend if you pleased. I personally dislike Norton as it is a resource hog. There are better free alternatives out there like AVG and ZoneAlarm.

If you are referring to closing the lid and having it go into sleep mode, it works fine on my machine.

Nothing jumps right out. The new machines I've seen lately have been just as good as the ThinkPads of yesteryear.

    thanks ZaZ,

the standard warranty is 1 year... and its AU$300+ for the 3 year extended warranty. i'm always afrain of 1 year warranty.

by instant on/off; i meant the vista's new "sleep" feature.. that is said to be similar to mac's sleep. i usually left my mac to sleep all the time; there was no need to restart them, except under special cicumstances; like installing system updates.. do you use the sleep feature? is it stable?

Yes I use Vista sleep all the time. The main problem I have encountered is maintaining a network connection (lan or wifi) on wake-up. This is a VIsta problem (I think), not Thinkpad, and happens with or without Thinkvantage Netmanager. I often have to disable/re-enable on wake up to get the network connected.

hey, i just tried out my friend's new vista laptop today; and i must say; it is much much more robust than windows xp's standby function... but by using this sleep function... it will never wake up suddenly in the middle of a travel (eg. inside a bag) or something right?

The process of sleep and wake up is very quick; maybe about 5 seconds or less for each.

On the news it said that windows gonna release Windows 7 1 year earlier than its original roadmap, also won't follow the normal 4 year development time of their os developing tradition.
Why do you think they are so hurry to release the next os? (it's actually not a question becuz I probably already knew the answer :)

Exactly, and I think vista is actually better than xp, if you have the right hardwares to run it. I think ms just went to a wrong direction, it's not a hardware vendor like apple, and os is not like games. Why did they decide to push the hardware that much?
Off topic, sorry, my bad ;)
