Hi, a friend of mine has lenovo y330. It currently uses T5800. He would like to upgrade it to P8700.

Can it be done? I check his board and it says PM45. If I am not mistaken it should be fine. But I just need to make sure about it.

Can anybody confirm me with this upgrade?

    Thank you,

    sting...

My guess would be it can be done, but for most things you'll never notice a difference between a T5800 and a P8700. I'd suggest a SSD or Momentus XT if you're looking for a performance boost.

Well...you might get a bit more battery life considering the die size of the P series is newer and smaller.

I'd think it would be negligible considering that the power consumption differences at idle are very small. The only time you'd really notice a large difference is if you were stressing the CPU while on battery - the P-series processor would consume quite a bit less power than the T-series CPU.

True, but the CPU is only a small part of the power consumption. The screen sucks more juice.

I'd be willing to bet there could also be some CPU instructions (Advanced Technologies) that would make the CPU run more efficient if not faster in some task with different operation systems. Although that is a T series processor, I wouldn't put it in the class of the faster T series processors with more on board cache.

    I think what the question should be, is could I upgrade from a T5800 (800FSB) to a p8700 (1066FSB) .
