i'm going to be buying the y500 or the newest upgrade y510p and i was wondering if i should buy a hard drive to replace the 5400rpm 1tb hard drive and replace it, with a 7200 rpm hdd for example and i would like if someone could recommend what i should do and if it is worth replacing the 5400rpm drive with something different.

5400->7200 won't be that noticeable (research and others have told me that). Just upgrade the mSATA SSD and make it your primary boot drive and then you'll be good.

I am going to assume you meant mSATA SSD. Plextor m5m is one of the fastest on the market.. Crucial m4 is one of the most widely used.. It is your pick :p

I recomend the seagate 750gb 7200rpm hybrid hdd as a primary or secondary. Fast, cool, an quiet.

No. A 7200rpm 2.5" HDD is actually LESS desirable than your current 5400rpm 1TB drive.

If you want speed, spend $200 and put a 256GB mSATA SSD into your system. Run your OS, applications, and games off of that.

Your 2.5" SATA HDD drive should be used as a bulk storage drive for media content (music, photos, videos, pr0n, etc). For those purposes, you want a 5400rpm drive because it draws less power and generates less heat than a 7200rpm drive. For bulk storage purposes, HDD spindle speed is irrelevant. An MP3 audio file or MKV BluRay rip will playback equivalently well on a 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive.

Even if cost was not an issue, and someone gave me a 7200rpm drive, I'd still choose to put a 5400rpm drive in my system.
