the T and R series are finally available to buy with linux.
they made a terrible choice on distro, but they wanted something 'enterprise' so they didn't have much choice.
still, i don't want microsoft to get my money :D
i went to their website, and it does list the T61 as available with SUSE, but i can't actually spec it out with it.
    any ideas?

Why can't you just order whatever machine you like, set as you like, and then just install Linux as you please? Not sure I understand not being able to "spec it out" however that might be.

Linux is free; you can install whatever distro yanks your chain, no? Or is there something I'm just not seeing here (that's often the case! LOL

FWIW Dept: I like Suse 10.3, and have it dual-booted with Ubuntu on my desktop.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop version 10 is not free and so are many distros.
However, I think SLED 10 ThinkPad is cheaper then Windows ThinkPad as well. That's a big plus ;)

SLED is not openSUSE which is free; I like openSUSE more though.

See what I mean - I didn't know there was any paid version of Linux. Thanks for cluing me in here.

I'm using 10.3, btw, as I type this, and like it, too.

what i meant was i couldn't find a way to actually spec it (read, buy it)
going through the links it showed SUSE as an option, but i couldn't actually ever choose it.

    thanks for the link.

i'm guessing that regular coupon codes don't apply, right?
that's the problem with this. same for dell and ubuntu.
it's $50 cheaper, but you can't use the common coupon codes, so really, if you're a smart buyer, it costs you more :(
EDIT: just checked it, they don't offer Penryn for the T61 14" !!@!!

    >> it's just the same as every manufacturers. For linux, no one would ever use it just to play games anyway. So if they want to do such a specific task, you have a choice to buy Windows machine and make a dual-boot to Linux.

For the coupon, I can apply a coupon just fine--get $74 discount instantly for ThinkPad T61 with Integrated Graphics. It's still a smart choice if you are going to have this spec

but there are linux games, and you can play through WINE
and, you can have the cool compiz effects.
still, even if i wanted windows, i can get it for free from my university (i'm an EE student) so i wouldn't want to pay for it anyway.
i just wish they sold the laptop with the exact same options.
the best thing would (instead of having the linux machines on a separate page) have the OS choice just list linux.

you can't get the intel 4965 wireless card in linux either :(

This might help you understand what ZaZ means by " Ubuntu is a distro of Linux."
