What are people's experiences with loading a linux OS on the X61?

I've tried using a USBtoIDE cable but it wouldn't work. I've tried Wubi to load ubuntu virtually from windows and then copy over to a permanent partition, but wubi wouldn't install ubuntu properly (froze at some different random %'s in installation)

I'd like a permanent install, so not run off a USB key like I've seen people give guides for.

Starting to wish I bought a laptop with an optical drive! hah..

another pain in the ass is trying to boot to dos. I've tried creating a boot-usb drive with some guide on the net, but it was done on my desktop(xp pro) and wouldn't work on my X61(vista business). Not sure why that would even matter (the OS's).

    Thanks for any help,

    Christian.

go to bestbuy, grab an external USB DVD-RW, install ubuntu, bring back the DVD 2 days later because you don't like its color...

Worked great except the 3d UI (compiz) has a blocking bug with the intel card. I had to modify a config file to force it however I cannot play videos... hopefully, this bug will be resolved quickly
