    Hello,

My T61 (w/ XP) has replaced my Dell tower which was on and running 24 hours a day for weeks, sometimes months at a time. I am asking myself if my T61 in the advanced mini-dock should be running this much? Not sure if laptops are designed for such constant-on time.

I have been wondering if it would make sense to suspend or hibernate my machine at night? Would this be a good idea and cut down on wear & tear? Or not?

And if it’s a good idea, would suspend or hibernate be more preferable? The time to go into this state and come out does not matter to me. I am just trying to find the best way to prolong my system’s life.

    Thanks,
    Esmail

if you dont use the system for a couple of days (more than 1-2 days).. do a system shutdown. if not (providing standby is stable) do a standby instead... its the best way for laptops.
you better off doing a full system shutdown than hibernate...

Unfortunately I work every day, so the machine is in use 7 days a week.

No problem with either suspend or hibernate, they both seem to work quite well so I wouldn't hesitate to use either.

Can you explain why a standby might be preferable? Just curious.

    Thanks.

There is a slow battery drain, so slow that it is sometimes un-noticed when you hibernate or suspend the machine..its better to do a complete system shutdown and start off afresh everyday. Its only the battery which we are concern about., if the battery technology was better (probably totally evolved) then we could suspend/hibernate the laptops even for days together.

I would say just shut it down at night and use standby during the day. It's only a minute to boot up in the morning.

    We can already do that.

In relation to battery life, hibernation and shutdown are identically the same; neither drain battery. It is the sleep/standby function that will slowly drain your battery over time.

Agree with above. Use suspend for short durations, hibernate for longer durations.

I think you can even have the computer switch to hibernate if its on standby for more than a specified time, but im unsure where that setting is.

That would be cool, I'll have to poke around and see if I can find out.
