Ive been doing alot of reading on this subject and have decided to get a thinkpad. ive read many good things about build quality which is important to me. they are also the kewlest looking laptops ive seen :D

i wanted a 15.4 widescreen so i guess that kinda narrows it down to the Z series from what ive read. but i also want a core 2 duo cpu in this thinkpad but i cant find any...

so i guess what im asking is - can we expect a Z61m with merom anytime soon? Otherwise id have to reluctantly go with another brand.

I cant see spending all this money and not having 64 bit support, no matter how many ppl tell me i dont need it.

this sure would be a ton for me to spend on a computer. but the desktop i have is 7 years old and really starting to give me problems. and i need this for work so i seem to have convinced myself that this purchase is necessary.

so what do u think ... something like this coming out soon in the sub $1500 range? or should i look elsewhere? thanks in advance for your thoughts :)

There is no core 2 duo in the Z series anytime soon, and even it it were it'd be beyond your budget.

Core 2 duo is very overpriced and buying brand new technology is wasteful (that processor will have lost half its value by winter - just like the core duo had dropped in half since spring).

I wholly agree with all those who already told you that you dont need core 2 duo. There's so many things to spend your limited budget on instead... be it better graphics, memory, optical, or build quality.

but you could buy a toshiba or hp core 2 duo, consumer-level machine, dont expect it to last very long tho they're kinda like the disposable razors of laptops (and toshiba is infamous for ignoring warranty claims)

thanks for the reply. i am sad to hear there will be no Z61m C2D soon :(
but if there were i dont think it would be beyond this budget, or would it?
ive configured a pretty nice looking Z61m on the lenovo site for $1224.

oh well this is a disappointment. i surely dont want an hp, dell, or a toshiba. this really stinks.

looks like ill have to settle for yonah, or a C2D lenovo n100, or just tough it out and wait i suppose

That's what dell is here for. A s#*tload of coupons and a lot of cheap lappies with C2D. Thinkpads are very sturdy, but the ones that will be out with C2D will be way above your budget. Besides, Yonah vs Merom = not too much of a diff. The battery seems to stay the same, give or take some minutes and is far from the desktop. Yonah should be fine, and you should be able to get a thinkpad AND dual core under your budget range.

what do you think about these http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/notebooks/3000/n-series/index.html ??

they have the c2d, widescreen, they're not a dell, hp, or toshiba, and the price is great. is there any reason i should not be looking at these? thanks!

They are fine notebooks, but they are not ThinkPads in terms of quality. Unless you have a specific need you are not going to see any benefit from the Core Duo.
