I'm running Windows 7 on both my X61s and X200s and it works very well for the most part. If your T400 has BT, make sure to enable the BT radio before installing W7 or it will be a pain to get it to work. W7 on Thinkpads is extremely snappy (esp x64) and I would go far enough to say that it's developed enough to use as your primary OS. I do have issues getting some Thinkpad utils and drivers to work though. You might have better compatibility with x86 depending on the driver but for the most part they work well for me. I wish I could comment on battery life but I haven't used these machines in Vista enough to come up with a comparison.

Sweet, I am trying to decide between a W500 and a T400 myself and plan to use windows 7.
