When I got my thinkpad I didn't notice any cpu whining (might have been because my desktop computer was also on and sounds like airplane lol). When I did a clean install the sound didn't seem to present although sometimes I would hear a faint whining (I would need to move my hear close to the fan). However, lately I have been able to heard a lot. It's also strange because it seems to happen sporadically since under the same circumstances it will happen and then sometimes not. The sound is also 10x worse when run on battery and also seems to be more pronounced when I start to use my wireless mouse...

Now I don't know what do to. I feel like sending it to Lenovo to see if they can fix the problem but at the same time I feel like it's going to be a big hassle and I'm not even sure they will be able to fix it. Not to mention that I will be without my thinkpad for a couple of days (maybe weeks..) and will have to use by crappy desktop computer.

I have heard of different methods to fix it but I don't feel like using software that will compromise the performance of the CPU or make me disable stuff like power management.

Did anybody here managed to fix the problem by sending it to Lenovo?

If it is indeed electrical whine, it's a hardware problem that can't be solve by software (though it can be minimized) nor can Lenovo actually do anything about your current hardware. You'd have to send it back and get them to replace the offending part (CPU, motherboard, PSU, etc.)
