i have a t61 and my roomate and her friend have a macbook.

They think macbook is superior to t61. They think that they are special or something because they are mac os users and since xp can be installed on a mac they are asking me " why buy a thinkpad"???
They paid like 1300 and i paid 973 . However, we nearly have the same spec.

I think macbook is also very nice .
good design is the only thing i see!! nothing else is superior to the thinkpad t61
it just looks like a white piece of a plastic. similar to a guy who is well groomed but has a ugly personality.

What are the good things that t61 has over macbook

and what are more bad things about macbook?

    LOL!

First of all, you're most likely going to get a biased opinion posting it here on the Lenovo/IBM forum :p. But at the same time you'll get a biased opinion if you post this on the Apple forum :D. Anyways...

The Thinkpad is no doubt better built than the MacBook. The keyboard is the best in the industry. But there's a lot of nifty features about the MacBook as well, such as the ultra thin lid that can somehow feature a webcam in it without a bulge; the magnetic power cord that snaps right off if you trip over it so your laptop doesn't fly to the ground; the touchpad that you can scroll with by placing two fingers on the touchpad. These are things that add to the price of the MacBook.

But I have to say, there is the benefit of being able to run Mac OS X and Windows on the MacBook. If someone wants to try out Mac OS X but they know they will need Windows in one way or another then the MacBook is a great way to get the best of both worlds.

magnesium roll cage, track point, biometrics, second mouse button, thinkvantage power manager, HD active protection...etc.

You're talking about comparing a business class laptop to a consumer notebook.

oh and most importantly...no iHype. ;)

I love this, competitive sports with laptops.

Tell them you're willing to do the following to your laptop if they're willing to do the same with their laptops.

    1. Stand on top of it.
    2. Pour water on the keyboard.
    3. Drop it 3 feet from the ground.

Owning a mac is one thing, but owning it so as to run Windows, day after day, that, I do not get - just feels weird, like drinking tea through a straw.

I've always liked the macbook's form factor though, nice and light.

Alas, I think they reach their zenith early in life, boxed, safe from harm on the Apple shelves. They don't look half as good a couple of months later, at least the ones I've seen. Which is patently not true of Thinkpads, which again, from the ones I've seen, look perfectly fine, months and years later.

The MacBook has a boxy exterior. The edges of the MacBook will make your wrists hurt when you type on it. The T61 has a better keyboard as the MacBook has a more mushy keyboard like a cheap Dell.

However, most importantly, the MacBook will make you look exponentially cooler to those college kids. Hot guys and girls will give you their number after one glance of your hot, sexy, pornographic Macbook. It does not matter what your sexual orientation is: men and women will both want you. They will lust over the glossy, hard exterior and the soft and supple touchpad. Strangers will come up to you and give you a pragmatic explanation about how Macs are infinitesimally better than crappy, so-called PCs. Then you will get that look of approval on your informed decision. Obviously, the industry-leading glossy black or white plastic on the Macbook is better than other notebooks on the market.

With a T61, Apple fanboys (everyone has friends like this) will scoff at your IBM piece of garbage and ridicule why you bought such a monstrosity. Clearly, based on superficial glances, they will say how bland your T61 looks and how cheap it is. Then they will proceed to insult the way you dress and your family. Somehow it ends with how they will eat your future children. Well...it does not always exactly end that way, but it is not too far off.

Main point being, if your computer does not have a glowing, half-eaten fruit logo, do not eat it and return it to the store.

    ;)

Do we have to have this discussion every week?

    Thinkpad vs. macbook comparison
Getting pressured to buy a Macbook instead of T61...
IBM T61 or MacBook?? - The OP actually posted in this one. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?
MacBook vs. Lenovo Thinkpad T61 vs. Dell Latitude D830 vs. HP Pavilion dv6500t
T61/R61 vs Fujitsu A6030/E8210 vs Macbook Black or any other suggestion?

    Do a forum search already.

Power manager doesn't get TP's the same battery life that OSX does and Macbooks also have accelerometers that stop the hard drive when there's shock.

Didn't know that the macs had accelerometers...however, my fault on not being more specific about the power manager reference...it was more about being able to set your charging thresholds, not about batterylife...i haven't seen another program that allows this from any manufacturer.

I get pretty stoked about that PowerManager battery threshold thing...the replacement battery on my T43 only has 19 cycles on it and the defective recalled Sony battery had like 21 cycles with no battery wear being reported by NHC or PowerManager....

    Mac pros.
    OS (UNIX) is great
Mag safe adapter is cool until it burns up
Great customer service for the mag safe adapter that just burned up
    Display quality is excellent
You get to be with the in crowd if the crowd you need to be in with
    Heavy educational discount

Thinkpad Pros (in addition to those already mentioned)
Black doesn't cost a few hundred dollars extra
    Track Point
    Think Light
Keyboard (Keyboard sucks on the Macbook)
    Two button mouse
Can drive a motorcycle over it
Free software for just about everything you want
    Configurable as desired

The only real reason to get a Mac is for the OS

I agree, and I'll add a few more pluses for the Thinkpad:
    Better integrated graphics chip
    Faster bus speed
    Dedicated graphics option
Get a DVD burner for only $10 more than the combo drive
Larger screen (without weighing much more)
    Higher-resolution screen option
Option for expresscard slot or media card slot
    Fingerprint reader option
    Internal WWAN option
DVD drive can be swapped out for a secondary battery
    Docking station available

I guess I'll add a few Macbook pluses too:
Don't need a dock to get digital video output
The magsafe thing is kinda cool
Good battery life without extended battery sticking out
If you really like white, you're all set.

If I wanted to use last generation's chipset, and pay extra for the privilege, I'd go with macbook. But since I wanted the new stuff and wanted to pay even less than the current macbook offerings, I went with the T.

If you're not doing graphics or design work, the Macbook is a really good machine if you're young and somehow feel you're sticking it to MS, saving trees, fixing the ozone, want to feel connected to other nerds, and have a bunch of spare thoughts and time to waste on such silliness.

But if you just want a machine to get crap done, maybe play some games and burn some DVDs, and want it at a good value and build quality, the T61 is probably your better bet.

Linux and BSD are great but not for those who want hassle free computing.

OSX on a Thinkpad is illegal. The shrink wrap license limits it to running on a Macintosh computer.

I'd love to see someone sue Apple for this but I guess they get away with it because there market share is so small.

Imagine what would happen tomorrow if Microsoft stopped licensing it's OS and instead only supplied it on Microsoft branded machines. How many lawsuits do you think would be filed in a day?

It would make a large percentage of Apple owners very sad....

...then they'll go out and buy ThinkPads.
