i intend to use this laptop for a long time and i want to keep it as new as possible. i already got a case for it.

    1) i know the keyboard and palmrest will turn "shiny" after a couple of years. approximately how long would that be. I know it depends on use but what is the average. i know the keyboard is easily findable and replaceable but what about the palmrest, i don't see a lot on ebay.

    2) i sometimes unintentially spit on to the screen when i sneeze or cough, sometimes it's so fast that i don't even think about turning away. what is the best way to clean the matte screen? also a lot of past laptops i've used transfer the oil to the screen so the screen will get imprints of the keyboard. so far i haven't experienced it yet but does the keyboard touch the screen when it is closed or if i put it in my backpack which might push the screen up to the keyboard a bit?

    thanks

It sort of depends on usage but on all the Thinkpads I've had through the years, 2 to 3 years is when it starts to look real shiny. I think over time you'll find more x201 palmrests, especially as more people own them. It is an easy replacement part along with the keyboard.

I use a mix of dishwashing liquid and water to clean my screen and it works fine. I don't believe the keyboard touches the screen since the screen is somewhat recessed. You're fine with the x201 in the backpack, I don't see any problems with that.

I think it's probably best to worry less and enjoy using the new laptop, especially after your long delivery wait time...

    1. probably take years to the palm rest to get worn out.

    2. you need to improve your reflex... don't you get the warning sensation that you are going to sneeze one or two seconds before you actually sneeze?
What do you do when you go on a date? When you sitting across your girl while having dinner, and do you think about turning away or spit?

Palmrests never get shiny. If you use the laptop with hands that have grease on them (say from eating...) you'll turn the keys shiny pretty fast.

you would have to rub the palmrest a lot to make the palmrest shiny. It depends on the size of your hand and finger length, also the typing style matters. Basically it is possible to make the palmrest shiny after a certain period of use.

Regarding sneezing, some people gets momentarily incapacitated when they are able to sneeze (so basically they can't control the direction of sneezing when they are about to sneeze, i have a friend whom does that). While, some people just sneeze in a way that makes them comfortable i.e. directly in front of the LCD. So the OP could either of one of these sneezers.

The matte LCD on the Thinkpad is best cleaned with some Clean and Clear Toner (i use this).. and wiped clean with microfiber cloth or high quality tissue paper.

you are capable of cover your mouth but you choose not to because the subject you're about to offend is a computer not a human being.

I guess all you have to do is to think that you are always on a date with your X201 when you are in front it it!

    Remember to dress appropriately!

dont worry about it being in the backpack. I mashed my x200 inside my bag against the bus seats, doors, etc. every day. I lean on it and everything - nothing happens. You try that with a macbook and seriously the glass will crack (I'm not an apple hater. This is how I treat my computers. Put up or leave my bag)

Nothing at all happens. That's why I stick with thinkpads - I don't have to care about their well being.

My T61 is two and a half years old, and I'm JUST starting to notice *some* shine on the keyboard. And I use this T61 everyday since it was new for about 4+ hours each day.
Just keep it clean every few weeks with a damp lint-free cloth and you should be good to go !
