I am deeply dissapointed with the build quality of the new thinkpad for following reasons.

1.keyboard isnt up to the standards
the keyboard on the older thinkpads were alot more responsive and effective as compared to the newer thinkpads. My brothers R60 or my friends T42 had amazing keyboards fitted in them. This one just doesnt live up to the standard.

    2. the lcd dispy is position unevenly
why on earth have they made the lcd display uneven? Its very annoying to look at it. I really dread using this laptop I want to trade this laptop in for the older r60 or the t42 because this just isnt a good laptop. There just isnt any practicality in this laptop.

3.thinklight is dimmer and positioned unevenly too
again there is no practicality on where the thinklight is positioned and the light misses to illuminate the most important part of the keyboard. which are the del, ins, home pgup and pgdn keys.

4.it lacks a memory card reader
what can be worse than that, i need to buy an external memory card reader now.

All in all its just not up to the standards and I would recommend you to buy one of the older thinkpads. I would recommend the r60 or the t42 has it is very practical. The r61 just doesnt make it.

The R61 isn't a new thinkpad. Did you buy it used?

Even though the standards have been dropping a bit, it's still very much better than the industry standard.

It's to fit the antenna. It never bothered me, because I usually look at the screen, rather than the bezel.

It's a little courtesy gesture. for you to use in a pinch when it's very dark and you have no light source. How many times does that happen? You should be happy they give it. Many, many laptops don't have it at all.

well, the T61 that I have has a reader. The money you save on the R series, the money you spend purchasing external hardware.

I doubt anyone would buy a T42 now that there's the wonderful T61s and the newest lineup of Txxx and Wxxx models

I brought this R61 a few months ago, infact its just been 2 months since the time I brought it. Also it might be useful for you to realize that the earlier thinkpads were made with more sensibility than the newer ones. Its not a discussion about having the thinklight or not but its about the logic or practicality where the thinklight has been placed. My last point, yes maybe my laptop is a budget laptop but please if you dont mind considering the fact that almost every low end laptop now provides you with a memory card reader as its a very standard device.

The R60 and R61 use the same keyboards. I don't know how yours is worse. If you dislike it that much ask for a replacement.

This has been well documented since the R61 and T61's release. Almost every review has noted it. I personally don't see what this has to do with the quality issue.

Many R61s have card readers. If it was that important that you get one, then maybe you should have bought one with it. Again I don't see this as a quality issue.

And you probably paid 600 bucks for the r61, compared to well over a 1000 for the older thinkpads. The quality of new thinkpads is fine, especially considering the price point.

wow wow. i am talking much about the price tag. what i am worried about is the sensibility on where the display is placed and where the think light illuminates. it obviously clearly lacks common sense. i would really love to remove this display and change it for something that has a more centerd display and a more centered thinklight because its just annoying to sit down and look at it. really. if thinkpad keeps going like this, it wont be long before ppl start looking at macs as an alternative.

Most buyers were aware of the uncentered screen before their purchases IMHO.

The card reader is an option that you did not choose or were not given the right to.

You can only blame the light for not living up to your own expectations.
