i just got this R40 from newegg. it seemed like an awesome price, and IBM said even they couldn't match it. [8D]

i've ordered a fujitsu 40GB 5400 rpm drive to replace the 60GB 4200 (also fujitsu, i believe -- for sale! [ :D]), and i also want to upgrade the memory to 512. my question is will these thinkpads take pc2700 ram, or do they default to only being able to use pc2100 speeds? if so, i'll just get another 256mb of pc2100 instead of a 512 stick of the 2700. thanks!

p.s. i've tried HP, sager, fujitsu, and chembook, and nothing comes close to the quality of this ibm. these are really great machines. [ :D]

    It is PC2100.

I am not positive, but I think you can buy PC2700 ram (if you want), but it will only perform at PC2100 speed.

thanks, i didn't think to check crucial. it seems that the r40 only takes 2100, which is kind of disappointing as the r50 takes 2700. but at least i will save a few bucks [ :D], and the performance difference probably won't be noticeable for most things. i might call IBM tech support tomorrow just to confirm, will post back if they tell me anything different.

    Hi notebloke,
Great minds think alike, I bought the same model from newegg a couple of months ago and upgraded my drive to the hitachi 60Gb 7200.
If your still in the market for memory I have the 256MB module from my R40 I would sell cheap. I pulled it out the 1st week as I put two 512's into mine. If you live in the US, I sell mine to you for $35 shipping included. If your interested drop me an note at
[email protected], I have a paypal account and a +280 ebay feedback rating. If not, enjoy your R40 it is a great system at a great price.

i got my new hard drive today and finally got around to checking the ram that's installed, and it's a hynix PC2700 module. i had to call IBM for a new cd-rom drive because this one is slightly defective (won't close all the time) and i asked them about the memory. the guy checked and said the R40s indeed do take PC2700. so thanks for the offer bootleg, but i will pass. and for anyone else wondering, the R40 takes PC2700.

    Hi notebloke,
Of course any notebook will take faster RAM than is specified, but unless you have the means to overclock you are just wasting money as it won't make anything go faster. So you could put PC2700 or even PC3500, but it will still only run at PC2100 speed. That said if the prices are the same, you might as well get the faster stuff.
