the design capacity for a 9-cell is 84.24 Wh, right?

i accidentally let my battery run out all the way and now it reads as full charge capacity of 86.89 Wh.

is a battery reset in order?

Why would it be? You are over 100 %, this is relatively common for new batteries. A reset is generally only performed if you believe your Full Charge Capacity is far BELOW what you think it should.

well the battery isn't new. before letting it run out, it listed below design capacity, like 99% of design.

i was thinking the battery might have been damaged. im doing the reset anyways. ill post results tomorrow.

    What are you talking about...

The capacity of the battery will lessen with use and time. If it doesn't suddenly drop in capacitance, you're fine. Stop worrying so much. If you completely discharge it once, it isn't the end of the world. Deep cycling it once in a while isn't a bad thing necessarily.

It's normal for the max capacity to fluctuate a bit. Don't worry about it.

On the contrary. Draining a lithium cell within a battery pack beyond a certain voltage will kill the cell and the entire pack, even just one time. That being said all li-ion battery packs have circuitry in them that shuts off the battery below a certain voltage, well short of draining any individual cell to the point of destroying (in said scenario above).

You've essentially already done a refresh cycle by draining the battery to the point where it's 0%. Your pack is fine. Dont' worry about it, and you don't need to refresh.

after resetting, the max capacity did increase beyond design max: 86 Wh.
