    Hello

this is my first post. sad that it has to be a problem that i am posting.

i have a T61 and well. i think the video is just plain shot. i get colored blocks every were during boot, and when booted left side has a green miss color and left is just black white. along with top bottom being the same. does this though the VGA connector also.

but heres a little more history on her.

got her on the low. i am a tech for a local Pc/Laptop repair a student had brought it in with this problem. was out of warranty and replacement main board was 500 something and labor was 80. student said just trash it they will get a new one.

so i said id keep it and get a main board later down the road. 4ish months past and its just sitting on a shelf in my room i turn it on and well. EVER THING WAS FINE! for the hole day. i reloaded it thanks to F11 and installed some programs and games.

later that night im out with my friends and i pull out my laptop to show them some videos and the screen went all funny like i described above. restarted it and went back to normal. now it wont correct its self again.

i am thinking the student from before had over clocked the GPU, and maybe some solder shrank or something?

any one else out there having this problem? thank you for your time

Is it a T61 with dedicated GPU? If so the NVS140m is based on the 8400GS meaning it might suffer from solder issues. From your description, it does sound like the GPU has burnt out.

yes it is dedicated.. the week i first had it i tore it down and cleaned every thing and replayed thermal compound.

is it possible to repair the solder issue? i am skilled in soldering, and i have friends that are a lot better than I.

im really wanting to know if its a common problem. i would like to buy a replacement board. used is 250, new is around 480 from IBM.

The soldering issue is of microscopic scale. So its impossible to fix once its dead. And yes it is a common problem with 8xxx series GPUs. There appears to be more and more 8xxx series GPUs failing at the moment.

Nvidia issue is/was due to the type of solder they were using. So yeah, that.

I had the same issue too. The unit was out of warranty but my credit card covered it. If you are within 2 years of the purchase date, your CC company might be able to help

edit: nevermind, I just re-read your post.

However, with the old t61 I had (the CC company let me keep it), I was able to pick off a new intel mobo for $115 off ebay and installed that. Works fine as my new backup/community notebook
