the late generations look so poor compared with old ones

My favorite to this day was my first ThinkPad, the 380ED. Everything else is built like a potato chip.
-
I liked my first ThinkPad, the R50e. It really opened my eyes the difference between a consumer notebook and a business notebook in terms of engineering and ergonomic design.
-
Compared to how thick that one is, I think everything else is a potato chip.
I still break mine out from time to time. -
I literally dropped (15ft) that thing turned on and it chipped my tile floor LOL.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
ThinkPad > Tile floor.
Man all these instances of the trauma done to ThinkPads, I baby mine...lol -
While I think the 380ED was a good laptop in its day, if we're making that comparison, it was built like a paving brick.
-
The only thing that current generation of Thinkpad is worse than the previous gen is the screen resolution and viewing angle. With the release of every generation the aspect ratio is getting narrower and narrower. At least Lenovo attempt fix the screen issure with the introduction of IPS screen on the X220, I just hope that is 16:10 and higher resolution.

You could blame Lenovo if they were the only company doing this. However, every company is doing it. They're all subject to the LCD panel manufacturers.
-
And you could say the LCD panel manufacturers are only doing it because that's what the laptop and desktop display companies are requesting.
Chicken-and-egg. I have more pull with the laptop companies, as I'm a direct customer of theirs.
-
But that would be incorrect. LCD panel manufacturers are doing it because that's what TV companies are requesting, and TV companies are a bigger market to them than laptop companies, so they're sticking laptop companies with a "Buy this aspect ratio or we'll charge you more money". Laptop vendors know large enterprise corporations aren't going to spend an extra $100 each for 16:10 laptops, and they can't afford to lose business.
It is cheaper to cut all 16:9 panels than it is to cut 16:9 and 16:10; that is why the LCD vendors are doing what they are doing.
