    Hello guys!

i got my Thinkpad T61 7664-04U at a retailer. after checking several times for all the specifications, i found that the nVidia Quadro NVS 140M in my system is NOT 128 mb, it is actually 512 mb. Is it possible?

does anyone have this same strange thing?

It only has 128mb of dedicated memory, however if you include shared memory it quite likely is 512mb. Most people don't referred to the shared memory when talking about the amount of memory on a card, however.

It's called turbocache, where, just like on integrated gpus, your card takes system ram as it needs it.

well, i've checked it out carefully. i've noticed that every program identified it as 512. and my RAM is at 1gig. i don't see any RAM sharing thing involved.

Programs report my 570m as having over 1 gig.... it's just the system RAM sharing.

Whether or not you believe it is up to you.

But your card only comes with 128mb of dedicated memory, the rest is shared with the system ram.

You have 1GB of total system RAM? What OS are you using?

Your video card DEFINITELY only has 128 megs of video RAM.

It is sharing your system memory.

What OS are you using? I bet you have Vista. I know on my computer, which uses Vista 64 bit, programs used to say that my video card had 2 GIGABYTES of memory! Yeah sure...

I had 4 gigs of system RAM. I tried pulling out a gig, and then programs think my video card has 2 gigs. Basically, the video card will report 1/2 of whatever your system RAM is, in Vista 64 bit.

I think in XP it behaves differently, and will only report 512 megs, no more, even if you have more system RAM.

I actually like Vista but I can't blame you for liking XP better :D

After all... Vista doesn't really add anything really useful. I mean, readyboost is kinda nice and Aero Glass is fun to look at, etc. etc... but it's really toys isn't it?

I use XP on my home PC and my work PC, it just works. Simple and effective.

i agree. vista is just like an unfinished business that needs to be taken care of. i believe it will be better just like XP soon after at least 1 or 2 service packs. for now, driver issues are hectic enough :)

I use vista on my t61p but there is no way I would use it on an older machine, we are lucky with the T61p that it's all brand spankin new hardware and has vista drivers , both 64 bit and 32 bit... I would hate to deal with the driver issues older hardware has!

I think Lenovo seems to do better than most on having drivers available for every flavor of OS. Heck they even do a good job on Linux driver support!

No. It isn't. Most of the changes I see in Vista are infrastructural, the kinds of facilities that windows has needed for a long time but hasn't had. Consider for a moment Complete PC backup and shadow copying as well as the bootable DVD that most laptop owners do not have. Those faciltiies are really nice and are solid and very well done. They have a myriad of new utilities that most people do not know exit. Most people believe they have to go out and spend an addition $50 for acronis when they do not have to spend that at all unless you XP and them you really do need it. I think most of the improvements to Vista are under the hood where few people look and even fewer people understand what they are seeing.

Vista is a big improvement from MS. It will definitely be the better OS in the future, but not right now since it's not stable enough to run on a lot of apps and hardwares. Stability is the key requirement for any user who are IT literate.
