It seems that though the Quadro NVS 140m is based on 8400 GS, which reportedly is defective, ThinkPads that came with the said gfx card seem okay. Any comments from ThinkPad owners with Quadro 140m?

The reason I am asking is because I am considering a ThinkPad T61 with T8300 processor, WXGA+, 250GB HDD, 2GB DDR2 (which I'll up to 4GB) and with the said 140m card and I expect it to be on commission for some 4-5 years. It's the best specification for a ThinkPad that is available locally (Philippines). I simply can't wait for T400 because if ever it gets release in the US come August, it might only become available after 2-3 months here.

    Thanks!

    My comments on the 140m.

I've a T61, 2.4 Core 2 Duo, 4gb ram(3.1gb) and the 140m. Generally no complains when using it except when I'm playing Team Fortress 2(Source engine).

Playing for the first hour is generally fine, but if I continue playing it for a extended period of time, the game will (occasionaly), starts to lag badly. I'm pretty sure it's isn't network or processor lag. Note that I'm using it at room temperature.

I suspect that the 140m is throttling down itself due to the heat?? I'm not that sure on this.

This is the reason I didn't get a Thinkpad (I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted a sleak low profile thinkpad w/ a dedicated card). I couldn't wait for the Centrino 2 refresh (school), and so I went with something else.

    Oh, Thinkpad...

I have the 140M and it works flawlessly. I don't use any CAD or business apps (yet), but games like Oblivion run just fine for me...

Using the latest Lenovo released driver by the way.

I've played Counter-Strike Source for 3 hours straight on my T61 (with an NVS 140M) without a problem. No problems to speak of.

Thanks Arkit3kt and m0cha, very reassuring! If it doesn't overheat in such games, then I guess it wouldn't be a problem with more common usage..

as an aside: has the 8400/8600 defective issue been confirmed by anyone other the the inquirer yet?

When I initially heard this I had reservations - if not outright skepticism - about the inquirer reporting this. However after reading the actual article, compounded with the fact nvidia have yet to make an official statement, it's hard not to buy into the inquirers (not so?) wild accusations.

I've ordered four ThinkPads this year with the NVS 140M and have had no problems with any of them.

I've had my T61 with the 140m for a year now and play games regularly on it (Half Life 2, Guild Wars etc...) and no problems here either.

I have a 5 month old T61 with the T8300 processor and 3 megs of RAM.

I'm not a heavy graphics user, but do play Urban Terror every now and then and have had no problems at all with graphics. I run the game at high resolution and have played for 2 hours straight. The palm rest gets a bit warm (not hot by any means) on the right hand side....but I think that's where the hard drive is. I have opened up the palmrest to change the ram and didn't see anything that looked like a graphics card chip anywhere around the right palm rest.
