Seeing as price is not considered, the T-series obviously looks nicer. It's much thinner and has more of the traditional Thinkpad style. The major reason to consider an SL-series Thinkpad is price.

Get the T series.

T all the way.

T series. Hands down.

SL series is for people who wants a Thinkpad but can't afford it. The T series is still the bread and butter (heart and soul) of Thinkpads. So if your friends can afford the T series then get it, forget about the SL series.
The SL series don't even have a proper magnesium roll cage (there are other things that is missing too), if your friend can't afford the T series get the the R series at least, trust me this is will be smartest investment your friend will ever make for his laptop purchase. -

The SL-series is a competitor to entry-level business models like the Dell Vostro line and HP ProBook. The SL models lack the ThinkPad Roll Cage which is the backbone of the ThinkPad's legendary durability. Some SL models offer a choice between Matte/Anti-glare displays and VibrantView (Glossy). Glossy displays aren't offered on any other ThinkPad model.
The SL models are also bulkier than similarly-sized T-series ThinkPads. The SL is also the only ThinkPad, currently, with an HDMI port. Other than having a black exterior and the red TrackPoint device in the keyboard, the SL410/SL510 seem to have more in common with the consumer-oriented IdeaPads than other ThinkPads.
Amazingly, with current pricing and coupons, an SL410 and T400 with roughly similar hardware specs are priced within $50 of one another! Spending the additional $50 or so would be a no-brainer!!! -
I see. Many thanks for the reply, I'll have him read this thread and let him decide it.

The T has been proven and has a solid reputation, seeing as the T series has existed since 2000 with the release of the T20, it's been the flagship or showcase of IBM/Lenovo's newest designs and features. The T series is like the Civic (car) of ThinkPads. The SL was released about 2 years ago i think, and it's reputation has been far from stellar since it has no roll-cage and is basically an IdeaPad with a ThinkPad body kit, then again, the first T series and some later ones didn't have the roll cage either, but they used very thick plastic to reinforce everything, i still have a T21 that runs fine from 2001 apart from loose cables connecting the LCD so i have to move the screen back and forth a few times to get the LCD to turn on, like jiggling the cables
The T series will have existed for a decade in 18 days! -

If sticking to the laptop-car comparison principle, an Ideapad would be more comparable with a Civic. Whilst perhaps a SL would be an Accord -
