I don't understand my computer right now. I have a 160 harddisk. after lenovo got portions, i have 128 gigs left for space. out of the 128, i have 38 gigs left. But when i look at the space i occupied from my files, it only adds up to 32 gigs. and i don't know where my 58 gigs went to.

can anybody help me on this? thank you

Probably either System Restore or Rescue and Recovery, or both, are the likely culprits.

i thought so. how do i fix this? I think vista and thinkvantage makes 2 separate back ups that is just insane. is there a way to modify this? i tried going to system restore but i can't find the options unlike in XP before.

I don't think Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery saves backups by schedule by default, so unless you enabled that, R&R isn't eating your disk space. Open up Rescue and Recovery to check.

You can either completely disable the Windows System Restore (I don't recommend it) or reduce the disk space used by System Restore, which is what I did. I don't understand why the System Restore control options were simplified/removed from XP to Vista, but it is annoying.

I had the same issue of having 10 GB of memory I couldn't find and it was used by system restore, thanks for the link to reduce the disk space

If this is in Vista, Volume Shadow Copies may also be to blame. To clear those out simply open My Computer, then right click on the drive > Properties > Disk Cleanup > More Options > and then select "Clean up..." under the "System Restore and Shadow Copies" panel.

"Volume Shadow Copies" is basically another term for the backups that System Restore makes. But yeah, that's a good way to clear them out if you're sure you won't need them.

yeah, thanks to everyone. I checked my R&R, it consumed around 21GB and about the same amount from system restore.. Im off to buy an external HD for backups.
