hi
im not sure what model laptop i have
its a VERY old ibm thinkpad that runs on windows millennium edition sp 4
it says its a type 1161 42Y s/n AA
i googled it and it told me that i might have a 1200 1161?
it doesn't even have a touchpad, only a trackpoint with 3 buttons
i right clicked properties on my computer and it gave me x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 6
AT/AT compatible
130,480 KB RAM (insert lol here)
anyways, i was wondering would i be able to upgrade it anyway? is it even possible? lol
for some reason the ethernet cable connection slot doesn't work, any ideas why? the lights that are on the slot dont even light up...but i remember that it was blocked/covered before by what looked like a factory cover for the ethernet cable...thanks

Look at the bottom of the notebook, the model should be there. For ethernet, you can get a PCMCIA card for that at your local Best Buy (provided you live Stateside)
-
That's pretty old school.
I wouldn't spend any money (maybe very little if you insist) on that machine if I were you. Any repairs or upgrades should be done by you or a friend/family that'll do it for free. This is only my opinion.

Your name suggests you have a white 5th gen Prelude.
I should have just edited my previous post :| -
wow you guys reply so quick.
it takes awhile over at tabletpcreview...those slowpokes...haha
and betatron, yes! a white 5th gen lude!
do you have one too? or you yourself are a car enthusiast?
anyhow, i found out what model i have its a ibm thinkpad type 1161 42U
i got this laptop like 2 years ago from a relative who didn't want it and its been in my closet ever since...lol
and i do remember my relative telling me i had to buy some kinda thing so i could use ethernet, cuz from what i remember, he had like a ethernet cable connected to some kinda usb thing that connected to the usb slot in the laptop which allowed it to use the internet.
but i thought it would be cool if i could get it to be working and just use it for internet and microsoft word and such-it could be a computer for when i study=i cant play any games lol -
Dynex® - Notebook 10/100 32-Bit PCMCIA Network Card
is that what i need?
and it looks like i would stick it into the side of my thinkpad?
i jsut measure how big that slot is and its only 2.25inchs wide... -
Yea that PCMCIA card should work.
Get the best price you can for one.
...and yes I'm a car enthusiast who owns a Nordic Mist Metallic BB6 who wishes he owned an '03 Mustang Cobra -
!!!
where are you located?
any mods?
cobra? we smoke v6 mustangs! lol
im planning to move up to a s2k soon, economy is weak, must capitalize! -
oh and for the PCMIA card, it looks like it wont fit into that 2.25inch slot i mentioned though....
-
Hmmm... I think it will work.
Can some one confirm this?
I'm in NYC.
My car only has an intake (ebay), Header, and exhaust (WS2). WWRS body kit, soon to be replaced by OEM front and Mugen replica sides and rear.
I don't think that we'll be smoking any Cobra's with our cars unless we have some crazy turbo setup. SC v8 > naturally aspirated inline 4.
This link should also provide some answers:

oo
i saw a pic of a white lude with oem front and mugen sides+rear
its sexy lol
im planning to get a mugen front, but im still wondering about that...
anyhow, its its hard to encounter a car enthusiast who is also, how do we say it? computer enthusiast? -
@ BetaTron
If you are referring to the PCMCIA network card, it should work. I have an old Compaq Presario laptop that has one Type I/II PCMCIA slot and it works just fine in Windows 2000. The Wiki article on that series of IBM Thinkpad says that the computer has a Type III CardBus slot. CardBus and PCMCIA are essentially one in the same. The Dynex card will stick out the side of the computer, but not by much. It is designed like that so people who have only one CardBus slot could use it as well. -
I'm always back and forth
PM incoming.
Never mind, can't PM you :|
You'll find some good people and good info at www.preludeonline.com. Check them out.
Yes Datamonger I was referring to the PCMCIA card. Thanks for the confirmation. -
preludeonline is very useful. but deamn is that site slow compared to alot of forum sites...
-
True, but how many Prelude owners do you know compared to say Civics.
The search function has helped me tremendously.
Anyway good luck with your lappy and your BB6 -
yea thanks, i will head out to bestbuy some time and get that card...after finals...
the main reason why i asked was because i had a hp tx2500z come in my mail the other day and it brought up the question- "i wonder if that laptop still works lol"
well i actually know a lot of prelude owners around my area lol...
there 3 that are within walking distance of my house....
but they're still somewhat rare to see.
i cant wait till i get enough money to move up to ap1/2(i like the ap2 headlights and tailights)
so i think my problem is solved, thanks guys
need to know what model i have.
