Since we're back on the Thinkpad frankenputer theme, does anyone know if I can upgrade the screen in my T61? (currently have 1440 x 900, seems dim compared to the newer panels) Are there 16:10 IPS or 1080p panels that I can swap out with my current panel? If so, has anyone successfully done it?

I currently have a stock T9300/Nvidia 140M graphics with upgraded 4 GB RAM and Intel 320 series (SATAII) SSD (thanks middleton!).

It's more than capable of running a 1080p display as I am currently multitasking with a 1080p external display (via docking station) in addition to my 1440x900.

No. You're out of luck in the respect of a replacement higher-end panel for that screen size/ratio.

If you're into FrankenPadding and the brightness is the only thing that bothers you, a LED panel from T400 could be thrown in with some additional hacking. Having said that, these screens are nothing to write home about in terms of viewing angles and colour accuracy.

If it were my T61 I'd just leave it as-is.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the insight...I guess I'll just have to endure another year or so til the next versions come in (16:10 display at a higher resolution is fine compared to the disappointing new stock res of 1366x768 on the T430/X230 and 1900x900 on X1C/W530).

Also, is it just me or are the new standard laptops kinda unremarkable? Ultimately I haven't pulled the trigger on anything new yet as my T61 still seems just as good in terms of everyday computing...granted battery life now sucks on an old (2nd) battery. I saw a T430 the other day and thought 'wow, my T61 looks the same size!'...after looking up the size specs they are pretty damn close...why haven't they slimmed down in the last 4 years?!?! I understand the T430u/s are slightly smaller, but they lack the upgradability/docking connector of the standard T430. Any idea if lenovo will eventually merge the slimmer versions with docking capabilities?

hi I love my t61p and t9300 with wuxga. Mine runs about 41c idle, and gpu is 39 or 40c on tpfanctrl, gpuz and hwmonitor have the gpu at 52c. I'm wondering if anyone has taken the thermal pad between the chipset (not the cpu or gpu) and the heatsind and used thermal paste instead. Or is the pad there to make up for any spacing between the chipset and heatsink. Thanks
