i got my T400 yesterday.. and i was just wondering
is it normal to have 90 some processes running?!?!

what are some ways to decrease that number.. it seems like my computer is always busy non-stop (the busy noise), even if there are no windows opened..

    what can i do?

Well, you can stop some of the thinkvantage programs you dont use from starting up. That should reduce the number of processes but the number of processes doesnt as important compared to what each process is doing. To start off uninstall the stuff you dont use/find useful and sometimes the programs just dont need the start processes. In any case open up task manager and see if any process is using cpu or hdd resources.

I would uninstall most of the Thinkvantage applications and keep power manager, active protection, and ultranav.

Uninstall the software you don't need, edit the startup options in msconfig. Stop services from starting that you don't need, etc...

You can google what vista services are critical for your uses and disable the ones you don't need.

Pretty much what the others said. I just got my T500 last week and I was pretty overwhelmed with the applications that were running. I went with the 'wait and see' approach. I wanted to wait and see which of the services were going to prove useful to me and which were not.

It didn't take long for me to realize the most important were:

    Ultranav
    Power Manager
    Active Protection

These services will allow you to control the trackpoint/trackpad, battery, power settings, switchable graphics and hard drive protection.

What the other peops have said is about true. It means that Microsoft turns one more by default than you need. However, turning off too many too fast can result in leaving you in an unsupportabe situation. Turn off a few each week. It's best to know ahead of time which to turn off.
