I've been reading the forums and it seems most people recommend a clean install of vista on a new system. I'm new to vista and my t400 didn't come with any discs so i'm a bit hesitant of taking on the task. First of all, how necessary is the clean install? It bugs me that there I have the trial stuff on there, but could i just uninstall the unnecessary stuff for now? And if so, any recommendations on what to programs to remove. If I do need to reinstall vista, do I request the discs from lenovo or do it through backing up? Thanks for any help.

First off you can and should burn a copy of the restore DVD's before thinking about a clean install. Look into your startmenu->thinkvantage folder and there should be a link to create the restore DVD's. As far as a clean install is concerned its a good idea to do and I would recommend it if you havent put your personal stuff yet. Starting off with a clean install you can onlyinstall the stuff you need and there wont be any left over crap from the uninstall process hogging disc space or the registry.

Personally, however I am still using the stock lenovo image with some of the thinkvantage stuff which I dont use turned off and even with only 2GB RAM it works quite fine. There wasnt a whole lot of junk/trialware programs to uninstall but some of the thinkvantage software dont necessarily need to run at startup, so based on my personal preference I keep the ones I find useful and remove the others.

Just let it go. It sounds like you got a good plan already - to uninstall the extra stuff. I'd also use MSCONFIG to turn off any programs you don't want to start with Windows. See how it goes. If you don't like it, you can always do a clean install later. Lenovo will not send you a disc and the recovery discs will only return your machine to its factory state. You're on your own for finding a disc.

Don't forget to make a copy of the SWTools folder as well. It contains all the drivers and software installed on your machine, which would come in handy for a clean install.
