I think mine does the same thing. The screen comes on after hibernation, blinks a couple times, and when it settles down, the brightness meter shows up on the screen. I think that's normal.

And by "battery hangs at 97" do you mean that it doesn't charge fully? This is normal behaviour, as it won't charge your battery until it passes a certain threshold. This is to save your battery. I've read that "topping off" every time is bad for your battery, so the laptop won't charge the battery until it falls below a certain point. This can be changed by double clicking the battery meter and going into the Power Manager. Click on the Battery Information tab, and then Battery Maintenance. You can change the threshold manually or set it to always charge to 100%. I have mine set to Optimize for battery lifespan, which I think is the default and has worked wonderfully for me.

That has to deal with the ATi settings. I forgot what it was... I think it was Catalyst AI that made it do that. Mine doesn't do that anymore - I updated my Catalyst drivers to ATi's official ones instead of using Lenovo's own ones also.

This is actually not true. it used to be the case with older notebooks, but newer models (the last few years) have the li-ion batteries in that the battery prefers to be topped off all the time much like the cell phones out now. its actually bad for the battery to run it to almost empty all the time.
