Hi all, I am the happy owner of a new x61 with all the trimmings, (except the 7k200 which is 5-10 days away)

While I wait for the new drive, I have done a custom recovery without all the extras, the lenovo system update and all of the ms vista updates, then I will customise my install.

Once finished I was planning on doing an acronis partition backup, then when the new drive comes I was going to restore this on to the new 200GB hitachi.

Can anyone tell me if I am losing anything by NOT doing a full manual install from scratch ?

typically, the anal among us feel a clean install is a religious experience and cannot be compromised.
If you are not religious or anal you might be ok doing what you said.
    But i don't think so.
    Amen.

It's better to do a clean install on a new HDD instead of a restore, since your restore has other drivers for the HDD. Anyway...it's always better to do a clean install.

so if I do a clean install on the 160gb 5400rpm, then image it and then copy it to the new 200gb 7200 rpm, there shouldn't be any real difference in the storage driver should there ?

Yes gbernard. You aren't changing storage drivers, just drives, which Windows can handle fine without getting "gunked." I have done that twice already, and we do it all the time @ work. It works perfectly fine.
