If you buy it with the optical drive. If you are interested in doing so buy it at the same time. It is very expensive to buy after the fact.

I personally do not have an optical drive in my ultrabase. I just use an external USB drive.

Im planning to get the Ultrabase with the DVD writer and additionally an Ultrabay and then add a big slow Hard Drive for media.

Can anyone comment if the Ultrabase works well? Will I notice any slow down from peripherals/storage/display connected through it?

The UltraBase does NOT include an optical drive by default. However, they have some in the outlet right now at a pretty good price ( $37 for a CD-RW/DVD ROM, and $58 for a DVD+RW).

You shouldn't notice any slowdown at all. The UltraBase uses a direct PCI-Express connection to the system board and all ports should behave like their native.

The $58 link does not seem to work. Is this the same one ?

Also found this DVD from Amazon. Is it compatible too ? (with the x201/x200 ultrabase)

Your outlet link is for the same one (I assume my link expired).

Do NOT get the one from Amazon. It is listed as compatible for models from the T40 to the Z61. This implies it is a PATA interface and thus NOT compatible with newer ThinkPads.
