I really don't like the fan noise made by my T43P.
And what is the point of underclocking the cpu while I paid for the cpu to work at normal speed. Why its users need a separate tool to turn the fan off while the company did nothing about it.
Why the so famed Thinkpad can't make its fan quiter? Or, other laptops are just the same or persumably worse in terms of noise?
If there is a quiter laptop with similar hardware built, I will consider return this.

Return and get T42 or t60.

Yeah, what goga said. Both are quieter and cooler. There are a number of reasons for the noise. A big reason is that the sonoma chipset (which is in the t43) seems to run hotter than those before or after it. Another reason is thinness of the t43. Thinner laptops have all the components crammed near each other and have little air movement within them, and so are harder to cool. You also probably have a radiator for a graphics card in that 'p'.
Lenovo seems to have made the decision to have the fan run more to keep the temperature down. I think they should have chosen different temperature thresholds that are more reasonable for the sonoma, so I use the fancontrol program to change them. I don't understand why lenovo seems to have ignored the lowest fan setting and has the next speed up running most of the time, but maybe they have a reason. Are you able to control the fan in any other computer without using an outside program? I am not aware of any.
While I do find the fan noise annoying sometimes, I'm not sure how it ranks compared to other computers. I think that some are quieter, but I know that some are louder.
Also, to decrease heat, you can under volt the processor, not underclock (although I guess you could do that too.) Undervolting the processor does not slow it down.
Anyway, if you don't like the noise and have the option to get a t60 or maybe a t42, I would consider doing so. -
good advice... The T43 was notorious for faults and the noisy fan is one of them. I've got a T42 and 2 T60s at home and they're a lot quieter than a colleague's T43.

Do you have any idea where I can buy a T42P? I can't see it from lenovo's site.
Also, if I return the machine, will the tax deducted be returned? or they will just return the cost of the laptop itself? -
You will not have to pay tax, just the shipping fees.
other laptops are quiter?
