    i want buy a used old thinkpad(newer thinkpad is expensive for me) for java programming /movie.

    which model of old thinkpads is best for above tasks?

    How much are you planning to spend? If you want, you can always check out older Thinkpad on eBay.

    A "used old"? Easy.

    My workhorse (a lot of programming) for now almost 4 years was (actually still is, until T400) R51. If I decide to sell it, it won't go more than $400 - new battery requires though.

    I second the T42p recommendation.

    I had a 15" Flexview T42p (2373-Q1U), with 1600x1200 resolution until lately. I was in a severe car crash and had the laptop bag in the trunk, it was totalled... sigh.

    That resolution is perfect for programming (and having lots of stuff going around, as needed for my job), well, at least it was for me. Lots of screen real estate. Gorgeous laptop really, and I'm really sad that Lenovo has gone to widescreen, that has smaller vertical aspect.
