In my econ class today I placed my t61 on the little retractable desk (basically a board that can be turned and folded back to the side of the auditorium seat when not used). The board was not stable and the laptop fell to the floor on the back of the screen. The laptop was open before and snapped close after the fall. It was quite a shock for me because 1. I did not buy any warranty with the t61 so if it breaks it's going to be a pain to fix 2. it basically disrupted the class when it fell. I am happy to say that nothing really happened to the laptop. I just picked it up and restarted it, and everything was still there and running fine.

What's more likely to damage, in general, besides the screen is the HDD. Do some tests to make sure it's all fine.

Hopefully the active protection retracted the disk head before impact

Depends if he/she had it activated and how sensitive it is set at. But glad that your laptop is ok.

It should. The APS is very sensitive. I tried gently tilting my T61 and noticed that the HDD paused a short while before it resumed reading. No worry for the OP.

At the default APS setting, if I sneeze with my notebook on my lap, the HD freezes. I presume a trip to the floor would be plenty to trigger it :D

In the event of a "disaster" like a sneeze the spill-resistant keyboard helps too. (Obviously kidding.)

Yeah default APS is pretty sensitive just my hard typing is sometimes enough to pause my music, like just now lol.
