Does anyone use power manager on win 8, probably under win 7 compatibility mode? How's is it? Would you recommend it?

Depends on the machine. I run it on my X1 and X301 under Win 8. I can recommend it if you like the power manager because you get easy access to all the power settings (unlike the integrated mess that Windows offers) and the ever so beloved battery gauge. I wasn't able to get it to run properly under Win 8.1 though. (couldn't create new profiles)

My understanding is that it's largely a "hit or miss" situation. While I personally don't run W8.x in any shape or form on any of my ThinkPads, from reading the related posts on TPF and LF I'm getting the impression that getting the Power Manager to work somewhat properly on one's ThinkPad is a chore. I have yet to hear about anyone achieving full functionality of that utility in the W8 realm, regardless of the system.

I've also been told that running PM under W8 may cause major system instability.

    Good luck.

Your fixed statement is actually true for Win 8.1 which has a system bug which causes explorer.exe to constantly crash. At my work place 3 machines have already been affected and the numbers of reported cases are increasing as well. This is a Windows bug, so the only thing that might fix it is a Microsoft Update. Re-installing is only a temporary fix.

Someone has even made the effort to go into some details: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=113770
