so i recently bought a x200/x201 ultrabase on ebay and he said it doesn't include anything in the bay (not even a blank spacer), so i am thinking about buying this. Would this work right out of the box? I heard that i might need to buy another one of those hard drive "holders" that holds the original drive in the laptop itself. would i need to buy taht?

Yes, it should work. I never used the hard drive caddy when I had the modular bay. I never had a problem with it, but I don't know what the official recommendation is.

Me neither, I just slip the hard drive without the holders in the Ultrabay caddy and its hasn't given me any problems as yet.

so there aren't any screws holding the hard drive in the bay? and also the one i linked is the correct one? i contacted the seller to make sure and he says x200 it will work but x201 won't. i know that they use the same docking station though so i'm assuming he just didn't know?

It may or may not be an issue for your model of thinkpad but I know my t520 has issues with the ultrabay adapter by itself.

Without the hard drive holder the drive will rattle/move around and if you turn the laptop upside down the drive will smack against the top internal part of the laptop.

So at least for my model the hard drive holder they don't include is required.

As in Hearst's image above, the rails are not used when the hard drive is in the caddy. The thin metal protective cage can be used or not -doesn't make any difference. The hard drive does not rattle around. The black plastic spacer at the bottom of the image snaps down to hold the hard drive in place. There are no screws to hold the hard drive in the caddy.

I have both the 2nd hard drive adapter (caddy) for the X220 Ultrabase Series 3, and the T42 2nd hard drive adapter (caddy). They both work the same way - except that one is for a SATA drive and the other for a PATA drive.

so just to make sure... the link that i provided in the first post about the hard drive caddy should work? if not, then what's the exact model number for it. I've been seeing a lot of caddys online that doesn't have the thinkpad logo like the one Hearst has.

Yeah I already ordered the ultrabase. But what's the difference between the caddy you linked and the one in my original post? They seem to Bethesda same but the part numbers are different.

It looks like either one would work. The one I linked to is a newer model that will probably work on later model ThinkPads and ThinkPad docks than the one you linked to (version III vs version II).

thanks for your help. also i've heard people who use the same caddy that you linked have a slight gap on the top on the bay when installed on their t410's. would this be a problem with the x200 ultrabase? i assume the ultrabase has a slimmer bay?

I can confirm that the version II and version III will work in the X200 ultrabase as I just tested them. The version II with the tab at its back end will not allow it to fit in the W/T 41-2x/51-2x ThinkPads. I have seen that the non-genuine magilla that does not have the tab as shown above may work for all. I don't know the electrical difference, if there is one, between the II & III but like I mentioned physically there is no tab at the back of the III.
