i currently have a x201 with an annoying problem where sometimes when i close the lid of press fn+f4 to standby, the standby indicator would come on but the battery indicator will stay on, meaning that it still is not really in standby. the fans are also still spinning. after about 30 seconds, both the standby indicator and battery indicator go out and the computer just turns off abruptly. when turning the laptop back on windows will tell me that the system was not shut down properly.

this problem happens intermittently but it is annoying. my question is how would lenovo fix the problem if there's a chance they won't see the problem? would it be a good idea to send the hdd with it too? since i'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.

Why not call support and see what they've got to say about it. Maybe there's a fix because someone else has had the same problem. As always, never send the drive unless it's part of the problem. Assume it's going to get wiped no matter what anyone tells you, which means you should be making a back up of anything you can't afford to be without.

As ZaZ has stated, call up support and see what is up. Make sure you backup your data or image your drive if you have programs you can't afford to lose. Also try to be as descriptive as possible. I deal with intermittent issues all the time at my job (and it's not fun).

yeah i actually upgraded the drive myself so i'll probably just send it off with the original drive with the factory image. but i'm pretty certain that it's a hardware problem because i've formated the drive and reinstalled the os and the problem still exists. even if i do a factory restore

i just want to get people's experience with sending a thinkpad for warranty for a intermittent problem

Just for giggles, have you tried a Linux boot disc. Sometimes a bad image could be the source of your issues. Also try:

    - Reseatting RAM/HDD

    - Using known good RAM

    - Removing AC adapter/battery and hold down the power button for 30 seconds 2-3 times

Depending the depot repairer: they may either do nothing or change your motherboard (even for problems that may not seem to be that severe).

i've reseated my ram and hdd before and it still happens. removing ac adapter and holding down the power button with the battery out usually fixes it for a while but it eventually comes back. i'm pretty sure my ram sticks are all good because i've never had any other problem such as data corruption, etc happen. thinkvantage also does not throw me an error when i test it there.

how easy is it to communicate with a lenovo support representative though. do most of them have heavy accents?

Do you still have the same problem with the original drive and the factory image?
