questions on lenovo warranty services

Hi guys,

this will be my first time buying a laptop.
I am thinking of buying the lenovo thinkpad. (I still haven't decided between
t430 and t530 -- probably the t530)

I wanted to ask you about warranty services offered by lenovo

Frow what i understand the Thinkpad protection service (aka accidental damage protection) must be bought
at the same time as the computer, right?

On the other hand I extend the standard warranty service at any time during the term of the original
warranty.

Also if I have understood terms correctly Onsite warranty is better than the depot counterpart.
(I live in NYC if it makes any difference)

Given all these things and the following prices:

2Yr Onsite + 2yr Thinkpad protection --> 119$
3Yr Onsite + 3yr Thinkpad protection --> 147$
3Yr Depot + 3yr Thinkpad protection --> 159$
4Yr Onsite + 4yr Thinkpad protection --> 263$

the 3Yr Onsite + 3 Yr TPP seems like the best option.


Also have you found the Battery warranty usefull?
to qualify for a battery change under the battery warranty,
the battery should be completely dead??

I'd highly recommend on-site coverage if you can afford it. It's easy to supervise the work, and the on-site techs are often quite knowledgable. Depot repairs are... well... EasyServ has a bit of a reputation, and it ain't for their prompt, flawless service.

Past that, the length of time is up to you. I tend to get either three or four years of coverage depending on the expected lifetime of the machine, but it all depends on how long you intend to keep it for.

Keep in mind, ThinkPads are generally quite easy to fix yourself if something does go wrong out of warranty. Lenovo publishes complete hardware disassembly/repair/replacement instructions and the parts can be ordered individually either from Lenovo or via eBay and similar sites.

I have no idea if the battery warranty is a good idea. I've never had nor used one.

The price difference between 3yrs extented warranty (50$) and 3yrs on site + Accidental Protection(150$) is around 100$

so in the end I think I am gonna stay with the 3yrs extended warranty.

Also for what I've found on the internet the battery warranty doesn't seem all that good, because they will replace your battery only once in the duration of the warranty. So in essence is like bying a spare battery for around 10$ discount.. imho not such a good deal.

Also one more question, I am assuming that the warranty is tied to the serial number of the machine not the name in the buyer's credit card..

I am asking this because I intend to buy using a friends credit card, and I don't want to have any problems with my warranty.

 

Yep, all Thinkpad warranties are tied to the machine and SN, rather than the owner
