The fan on my T43 sounds like it is dying, so I'm going to ask Lenovo to replace it. IIRC I read somewhere before that they only work on the computer in as-sold condition. So should I remove the second stick of RAM I added? Will they mind NHC being on there, or should I remove that as well?

I'd personally leave it. I would suggest removing the hard drive before shipping it off lest they wipe it while working on it. Has been known to happen.

Does removing the HDD not void the warranty?

Not at all. I have had IBM actually twice instruct me to remove and/or replace the HD in the process of receiving thinkpad depot service.

actually I hope they do wipe the hard drive - then maybe after reimaging Access Connections would work.

so I sent it back, and they replaced the fan just fine. Unfortunately it only booted once, then refused to do anything on startup - won't boot Windows, won't boot R&R, won't boot Ubuntu off a CD. So back it goes.

Before sending it in the first time, I backed up the hard drive through R&R. When I got it back it said the security chip was disabled and any backups previously made would not work. Is this common? Is R&R not worthwhile for backups? And R&R seems to have created some hidden files on the external drive I backed up to - anyone know how to get back the ~17GB it is using?

I personally prefer Acronis True Image.

For the whole process, how long were you without your computer? Do you have the regular depot warranty? I need to send mine in (for the fan also), but I can't be without a computer for too long.

that part worked great. I called on a Monday, they delivered a box (DHL) on Tuesday. I dropped it off at an OfficeMax on the way home from work a little after 4PM on Tuesday, website reported they started work on it around 6AM wednesday, reported finished around 3PM, was delivered Thursday just before noon.

Oh yeah, they also switched the location of my RAM sticks, putting the stock one in the bottom slot and the OCZ one I bought from NewEgg in the under-keyboard slot. Dunno why thye had to touch the RAM though.
