After reading this forum for about 6 months, I finally found a good deal on a r61i 15 inch, so I took the plunge.
Since I like to watch dvd's on my laptop, the one thing I had to have was a glossy screen. I know that's like blasphemy around here, but I just had to have it - in fact I may have the very last r61 glossy, as it wasn't offered as an option last time I checked on lenovo. Since the r61i was the only one that offered that, I had to stick with the slower cpu. The specs of my pc were as follows:
R61i
CPU: T5750
Vista Ultimate
15inch glossy
x3100 graphics
3 gigs ram
Ultra Nav
160gig 7200 hd
dvd rw
bluetooth
integrated camera
firewire
media reader
intel 3945abg
6 cell
First things first, I kept reading how the 15inch R61 was inferior in not having the lcd rollcage, but actually it's pretty solid. Definitely more so than my previous toshiba satillite and not far from my dell latitude that I use at work. So for all of you that are worried about the flimsiness of the 15inch, don't worry. It is hard plastic all over though, not the rubbery plastic on typical thinkpads, so if you want that, then avoid the 15inch r61. Also, it's heavy! So may not be the best travel laptop.
The 5750 is a budget cpu supposedly, however it's plenty fast for my surfing and word processing use.
On to the glossy monitor! My particular screen is a 15inch LG 1200x800 resolution glossy screen. I think it's pretty good, not as good as a mac pro screen, but plenty bright and sharp. Comparing it with my old celeron glossy toshiba satillite, it's about the same - r61 a tad brighter, viewing angle the r61 a tad worse. Still, very acceptable for dvd viewing at home (which is where I use it 99% of the time).
This was my first thinkpad, so I was eager to test this supposedly super fine keyboard. It's nice, but I didn't think it was that much better when compared to either the toshiba satillite or the dell latitude. In fact the fn/ctrl key placement is rather annoying (but getting used to it).
After I got the machine, I did a clean install and managed to claim 152gig from the 160gig hd. The HD is quiet and seems pretty fast.
The x3100 is fine for running vista. After the clean install and a few tweaks, it runs great. I haven't had it crash yet (keep fingers crossed).
The integrated cam works good for skype. Not the best quality, but it's nice to not have to attach a camera.
Intel wireless connects fast and is pretty stable. The bluetooth works pretty good too.
Anything annoying? Well, the think light for this unit is yellow (prefer white) and it has 3 usb slots.
The best part about my laptop so far is that it stays cool for hours on end. I've had it on for 4 hours straight and it stays pretty cool to the touch. Maybe slight warmth from the right hand palm area, but barely. I hated my toshiba (celeron m 1.6) because it was like a frying pan after an hour, forced me to use a very noisy laptop cooler. Now it's back to peaceful computing bliss...

Can I ask which model of the Toshiba Satellite you had? I had one that sounds very similar to your description. It recently passed...

The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
Thanks for the unique review. I haven't read too many reviews of the glossy screen for the R series. Could you take some pics of the screen? I would be real interested to see that.

Yeah my next notebook is going to have a brighter screen if not glossy. I wish they offered the glossy WSXGA+ that used to be an option on the N200. I don't see why they couldn't. I don't think they are offering the Vibrant View on the R61i any more.

It's only a rumor (or at least unofficial info), but the new SLxxx series looks like having glossy LCDs:
