okay I got W520 with two issues

    1. Battery is pretty loose (little more but i can deal with it)

    2. Dead pixel - one blue color

    3. Also screen has so much flex at the bottom that you pres it and screen get push out.

I am more worried about dead pixel (blue color on right end corner). I never had dead pixel before so my question is that get bigger or screen quality can go down over period time??

I refuse to repair in 21 days return period.

The dead pixels are defects that do not get larger. The screen quality does not go down.

Then return. I don't think anyone here can help you with the defects and like you I have very little tolerance for them when I spend $2k on a machine like that.

    yeah that's on the card.

But what I want to know anybody received W series with dead pixel and found more problems with screen later on?

Or should I expect such thing in FHD screen... just want to hear out others since I paid a lot for laptop and more for the screen.

As time goes by, it is less likely you will notice the dead pixel. It's like dust on a screen. Will become natural unless you're overly sensitive about it.

Most makers require three or more dead pixels for repair. However, considering what sounds like other defects in the assembly you have to make a decision. Keep and do nothing, keep and repair, or return.

I know what I would choose.

If I receive a machine with assembly defects, it's immediately returned. It doesn't matter who the maker is, work or personal, and retail brick/mortar, direct or retail online.

I have a zero defect policy on new electronics.

I would call Lenovo to see what your options are and then decide what to do. However, if I were in your shoes, I'd return the laptop if it exhibits any defects whatsoever. Another option would be to order another laptop and then return this one when the other one arrives. I've returned laptops to lenovo before well outside the 21 days and got free shipping back and no restocking fees.

    Return today.

this is my third W series return (two W510 & one W520)

just love thinkpad otherwise normal user will run away when you encounter such defects on top of the line laptops.

I agree all the laptops have something but I encounter one that you can't ignore for costly machines..

i was thinking that way but next order shipping date is 5/31/11

i don't want to keep this one that long (scare if they charge restocking after well past 21days)

What were your reasons for the returns? Just curious.

    dead pixel

screen looks dullest (confirm & compare with other thinpad in office... even friend of mine said at first look)

screen at the bottom had so much flex and game...

battery felt pretty loose i mean if day one is like that i am not sure after months it will stay like that but i will leave with that.

see some people don't like it or don't mind but screen was not FHD quality for sure and try all the options before returning... anyways it might be faulty one...

but new system wait time is 25days... if you order today shipping date is 5/30/11.. not sure I have patience neither time to wait that long...

I don't think it will be quite that bad. I just ordered 4/26, estimated shipping 5/15, shipped today 5/6. 10 days including the weekend. Of course I don't have the tracker number yet, or actually received it...

My 9 cell battery is a little loose too, thought I read somewhere this is true of everyone's W520. I'll probably just stick some electrical tape on the battery to tighten some of the slack. Also, with the laptop closed I can squeeze the laptop about 1/8 inch. Is this what you mean by flex?

battery is fine if it is loose.

You move left from where you see W520 on screen & move all the way to the center. Now you press with you figure (not hard press at all) the area i.e. center of the screen at push out all the way.

I mean not seen that kind of flex but bigger problem was screen not what I expect after paying $200 extra..

That 15.6" chassis has a known problem with battery play since my T510 has it as well (same chassis as W520).

But a zero-defect policy is the best one. If it doesn't work properly, return it.
Could have saved me a lot of headaches with exchanging this whiny T510 though I'm getting a W520 in its place...

I just did that on my W520, and pushing the center/bottom of the screen it flexes out about 1/8 of an inch. Everyone is saying zero defect policy, but these problems don't seem to be assembly problems but inherent fault of the design. Meaning, if you were to return the laptop and got another w520, you'd probably have the same problems.

My screen flexes at the bottom too when pressed, but seriously, why does this matter?

Exactly.......why does this matter? It doesn't, in my view. I don't plan to repeated press this spot to test it's integrity. It is a design consideration, and as with all products, it is a cost / benefit question. You might easily find another manufacturer who will charge you 30 % more for less of a machine.

But seriously, if these things bother you, by all means, buy a different brand.

if you checkout I had dullest screen & dead pixel that was the reason for return. I paid extra $200 for that screen so expect it be zero defect no question in my mind. Even I return Dell for dead pixel. I will not take that defect anyday.

Yes, that can be a different matter. I was actually referring more to the flex issue. I expect my screen to be good too, or it goes back.
