Well before...i had 102gb/149gb free...my computer was having problems while coming back from sleep mode, so I decided to do a restore from a restore point a few days back from the vista backup/restore program. I did not change any files, but miraculously, after the restore i had 120gb/free out of 149gb. All my files are still there, but this is a huge mystery to me. how did I gain 18gb out of nowhere? My backup was on an external HD, so that wasn't the solution.
I am so bewildered by this...how can 18gb come back out of nowhere? I had no other backups on my thinkpad HD...does anyone have any insight on this?
I am mind boggled. I guess it's a good thing..but im worried that something may be missing...18gb worth..wtf is going on? Thanks

I think Vista just deleted your System Restore points. As you can't set a limit for how much space System Restore uses, it tends to go wild and use up 15-20GB easily.
Just delete those restore points, by going into disk properties and Disk Cleanup. The 2nd tab will let you delete the restore points.
I think your restore deleted the rest of the restore points. I once cleaned up my restore points and gained more than 20GB!

but i never had any restore points that I know of. I just did one backup to the external HD. Does vista automatically create the restore points?

Yes it does. It'll use up to 15% of your max HD space.

how do I stop this from happening? Thanks

The only way that I know of is to turn off system restore on the drive. This is accessed from one of the tabs in Computer>Properties.
