    Hi, Guy,

I ordered the T42 a few days ago. Now I just called shopping IBM to transfer my call to technical support for recovery CDs. They told me that they no longer send it out for free(beginning November??). Is this true? Maybe I called the wrong place. Do you guys still remember the number to call for recovery CDs? I hope I could get the CD to install dual booting system. Thanks.

    Hi,

Thanks for replying. I have the T42 in my hands now. I tried to dial:
1-800-772-2227 +1 +2672 This number was supposed to be the number for requesting recovery CDs:
    http://www.aaltonen.us/forums/viewtopic.php?t=792

I called but this number has been disconnected. Then I called the 1-888-SHOP-IBM. I followed to the technical support and they told me it's no longer available for free. They didn't even ask me whether I bought one. Looks like it's true.

Why would you want a recovery disc of dated apps and drivers anyways? Go with a second HDD adapter (accompanied by mirroring software) and another HDD...

"On 'XP' we run mirror setups, meaning that as soon as we install 'XP' somewhere we install it again to a parallel partition. And you don't have to always go the entire install route to make this happen. What is important is that your main drive is properly partitioned before you begin, and what with the sizes of hard drives today it is almost nonsensical to not partition a drive as much as you can.

You might start in "DOS mode", in which case you definitely do not want to partition the whole disk. You need only your first "DOS" partition as a fallback and then an empty unformatted partition large enough to hold 'XP'. When 'XP' then asks where it is to install you give it the empty partition. And then once 'XP' is up and running you use its Disk Administrator to complete the partitioning of the drive. And by waiting until you can do it from 'XP' you don't waste the last twenty or thirty megabytes on the drive which would be invisible to the paraplegic DOS FDISK program.

And once you have the third and fourth partitions up in 'XP' you simply copy out all your files. You might need to physically install NT again, but no matter. For once it's done you're home free. Then you use the final fourth partition as a resting place for all your Registry hive files from both boots. And you number and document these properly. And you don't forget to get your Administrators' DAT file in there too!

So, when and if the unspeakable occurs, you simply boot to the mirror setup, expand your Registry hive files back into the proper location, and your other system is completely restored. The files you save are of course not the actual hive files, but the files found in the repair directory. These expand with the program EXPAND." - Rick Downes of Radsoft <http://radsoft.net/>
