Definitely not 10 minutes, closer to an hour most likely.

Seems like it takes forever. Restoring to factory state? Or a general backup? If it's just a general backup, it shouldnt take much more than an hour.

I have T61 which I just received on 11/7 and it has similar specs to yours, except I have 2 gig ram. Took me about 1.5 hours to restore completely.

Out of curiosity, why do you need to restore? Something you did or was your computer messed up at the factory?

Also, I have win XP, not sure if Vista would be different

I also have sp (pro, sp2). i am was trying to do a "restore" from a previous backup from the hard drive (size of backup file= 4.8 gigs), with option to restore applications and settings also. after i hit the final start button, the progress meter appeared but after 1 hr and 40 mins, the progress was o% so got impatient and shut the system down by holding the power button.

i am pretty sure, based on the responses, that my "restore" was hung up. but the good thing is the laptop did boot up but was missing several apps which i have restored manually. time for another backup???

the reason (your question)- recently i tried to burn a cd using dla and got BSOD in both attempts....so thought it will be a good idea to restore it to a state before the BSODs.

i am curious about your restore too...why did you have to do a restore on a 2-day old machine??

in my situation, "for ever" is pretty accurate..as i just posted, it was not a restore to factory settings (i.e., not from recoveryCDs)...a restore from a back up on my hd i had created a few days back and 0% progress after 100 mins.

re: restore to factory, i have seen posts stating that the recovery cds/dvds did not work in R&R 4.0 (that's what i have)....any insight or experence??

so in my case (4.7 gig) , no progress in 100 mins is a sure sign of something "stuck"

    thanks for the info

I think it was my error. After I received my Thinkpad, I started to download ALL updates and left it unattended. When I came back about 1 hour later, I found some errors (wireless card error is what I remember).

Next day, when I booted up, it was slow, but no errors. After I uninstalled MS office and some other programs I was getting SQL library error.

I probably could have tried to figure out what caused it, but decided to just do a clean re-install, as the machine was brand new.

I'll probably return my T61 WXGA for T61 XGA (non-wide) though...

WIth Vista Complete PC it is about an hour at least on a t61p and that's very understandable given the size of that task. I have now experience with lenovo's stuff.
