I play a game that makes my CPU run around 68-74 C, generally being around 70-72 Cmost of the time.

I play this game for sessions of 3 hours. Sometimes longer if my schedule allows it.

Is this okay? Does anybody know safe recommended temperatures for the y550p? Or is it more of a question of "how fast will I toast my laptop?"

I have the i7 720 qm quad core btw

that is the normal temperature range if you stress the CPU.

    thanks for the reply mate!

That's good to hear.. the only thing I'm worried about is that while playing that game I got that nvidea display kernel error that many others seem to be getting, however it seems that I do not get it nearly as quickly as the other unfortunate people do.

I read up on it and a forum post on the nvidia forums says that overheating is a common cause for the nvidia display kernel error.

Do you think it's a temperature problem because of the gaming or possibly something else?

Report GPU temp when gaming. Try HWMonitor.

you should have a look at the GPU temperature, if your CPU is operating at 70 degrees, then the GPU must be operating at around 90 degrees to get this sort of temperature related error.

the gpu processor usually runs around 65 when i play...

I just got the display error thing again :(. I have no idea why, the computer never really goes above 75 C when I play, and the gpu processor stays around 65.

^^^ Yeah, those temps are absolutely fine, unless the software doesn't read them correctly.
Try different programs like HWinfo32, GPU-Z, HWMonitor, Everest, etc.
