i have the cds already so is it safe to get rid of q: drive now>

In a single word, yep.
-
if you remove hidden partition, one key recover ( restore & recovery ) may stop working.
-
how do you get that partition back, say if you swap the hard drive?
-
you can use easeus disk copy. it'll work if the new harddisk size is the same as bigger than the old one.

In this connection, is it possible to buy the Recovery disks from Lenovo? Do they even sell them? I have a friend who just bought a x201 like me. But unlike me he nuked his HDD before making the recovery disks. His machine - like mine - came with the 32-bit version of Win 7, which he replaced - like I did - with the 64-bit version.
-
If I have a way to re install windows I completely reformat and delete all the partitions. So yes its safe, unless you want their partition setup.
-
(Still adoring your X201?)
