planning on replacing HDD on my newly purchased outlet X230 with a samsung 830/840 SSD. Seems like many if not most threads here have elaborate discussion re: installs of mSATA drives and the accompanying problems folks have had with that install. I would presume a straight up clone of the HDD to SSD with Samsung's migration software should be event-free. Anyone do this recently and find this process anything other than "painless"? The only specific question I have is if Samsung's migration software might be insufficient and that I might need something more robust like Acronis products.

    Just do a fresh install.

    You can thank me later.

I've done a handful of fresh installs in my day (mostly on desktops, but on a few laptops as well) with great satisfaction. But what could go wrong with a straight-up cloning?

With that said, would you recommend this guide if the fresh install is really the way to go? :

I use Acronis Home Premium 2014. Cloned to mSATA, M.2 and standard 2.5" SSD drives without issue.

I find the fresh install to be a colossal waste of time. Cloning a perfectly working setup is significantly faster and less hassle than doing a fresh install and loading all the drivers manually. I personally only recommend doing that if you're having issues with your current build and even then I'd opt for a system restore with the factory image before I'd do a fresh install. Just my opinion.

    Cheers,

So no love for bundled/downloadable cloning software from Samsung/Intel/whomever?

I've always used the Acronis product and haven't had any issue so I own a multi use 3 computer license. I haven't tried the bundled free stuff. As long as it supports the BIOS in your system you should be fine. Some of the free tools bundled pre-date Windows 8/8.1 so the whole EFI / Windows drive geometry bit doesn't work quite right but other than that I don't see why the free stuff wouldn't be ok.

    I just KNOW Acronis.

    Cheers,

    Clone if you can.

I purchased the same SSD, and made a fresh install to my x230 tablet, and it has been anything but pleasant because of Lenovo's poor drivers.

However, everything works perfect in Linux (Ubuntu 13.10) which means you won't have any problems with the actual hardware.

I'm not keen on cloning an OS from a spinning drive to SSD.

I'm even less keen on Lenovo's bloatware that is 80% useless in my opinion.

Yes. An excellent guide from my standpoint.
