Is it a good idea to buy RAM separately and self install it? I heard lenovo are known for its reliability, so would installing RAM myself make it less reliable? 4GB RAM cost way too much for any business laptop and it seems much cheaper to just buy the RAM stick. So would self-installing RAM be a recommended thing to do?

I don't have specific Lenovo experience, but changing RAM is usually very easy and straightforward. A few manufacturers put the RAM slots under the keyboard but most have it under a cover on the bottom of the computer. Download the manual for the computer and see if it shows how to change the RAM.
For peace of mind about compatibility you could use RAM such as Crucial where you can choose your model using the on-line selector.

I've updated RAM on a T60P before and it's a snap. All you have to do is remove the 4 screws that hold the palm rest and then lift the palm rest up, snap the RAM in, snap the palm rest back on, rescrew and you're done.
These things are designed to be upgraded easily so it won't at all affect the build quality of your machine. -
installing ram is a piece of cake, but most importantly, get a ram that will surely be compatible with the laptop. Basically many rams sold out there are compatible but a good brand makes it more reliable. For best compability, you should try look into crucial or kingston website and look for the ram parts compatible with the laptop. This will ensure that the ram will work.
